Like I said yesterday- it was a challenge to get back into school mode but I did it very gently and the students responded very well.
No Homework tonight :)
General Day
Started with an art activity in which I asked the students to re-create in picture form their most significant moments at camp. I intend to display them on the bulletin board outside the classroom and take a picture of the 'quilt' of picture memories and send it to Evans Lake :) The students enjoyed it and had an important chance to chat to each other and re-live their experiences.
Next we shared some stories from Neil Pasricha's, Book of Awesome- a few read their favourite excerpts to the class (the other side of the pillow, hot undies- from the dryer, absloute silence, the first couple of scoops from the peanut butter jar and the five second rule!!) Awesome!
We started to pen our very own Awesome Poems with great admiration and thanks to Mr. N. Pasricha for the inspiration...I shared mine
The first-of-the-season jump into cool lake water
on a hot, sticky afternoon,
The sunny snow capped peak of Mt. Garibaldi,
The unexpected quiet of a room full of children,
Scoring a free latte at Starbucks,
Happy tiredness on the bus ride home from camp,
Climbing into my own bed after sharing a cabin bunk for two days,
Hot water and fragrant soap
July,
Definitely July.
Awesome! Mrs. J.
I will share the students as they complete them and give me their permission. They seem to be enjoying writing them. I look forward to finding out their idea of 'Awesomeness'
After recess the UBC survey group arrived and the students participated in the second year of a three year study about bullying and perceptions of the students about their social responsibilitiy rights and expectations. This year they got to use machine (clickers) that hooked up to the computer. The researchers were able to tell which machine, by number, had completed the questions successfully or had missed some questions- very cool. The students did an amazing job. Sometimes they can really rise to the occasion. I was proud of them.
DEAR time was okay- took a while to settle some students after lunch. It always amazes me that despite having the same routine now for nearly ten months (!!) there are a few who still need to have individual direction and reminders about the same issues every day. What is with that- maybe I should start the Book of Annoying or slighty Disturbing-wonder how that would go over.
Cooperative Game- Murder Mystery
4 groups of 6
27 clues
read the clues and work together to solve the murder mystery
Great job- winners were Team Number 4 Callita and the boy sleuths and they all win a 'freezie' for their efforts (I still need to buy them and freeze them but it's all good- they'll get them on Friday)
Phys Ed outdoors- in record time we were able to agree and organize a six a-side soccer game and the rest of us played California Kickball outside in the sunshine with a giany rubber ball that was very awkward to catch and throw.
It was so neat for the first time this year to see nearly four classes from our school and a couple of classes from the high school out sharing the fields. I was also very impressed that the high school students were very encouraging to our student when they passed their were no nasty comments just wistful...remember when...one even told me that it was actually passed dimissal time already! Thanks.
3pm Dismissal
Have a nice night.
Hope to see more of you tomorrow- six students were away today.
Reminder: the end of the year is nigh... there will be a table of lost and found items set up in the foyer for the next couple of weeks please take the time to pop by and have good scour of the goodies.
Mrs J.
