The day sailed by despite the rain.
I think everyone enjoyed their vist to the high school this afternoon- see below if you'd like more details.
No Homework
actually there will be no more homework this school year. Homework will begin again in September.
Reminder
tomorrow is our big year end to the Splashdown Waterpark at Tsawassen. Come prepared- we are leaving at 9am and won't be able to wait for 'stragglers'
See the list of needed items on yesterday's blog entry or refer to the letter sent home
pray for sunshine (even sunshine with cloudy periods would be better than this rain!)
General Day
9:15-10:15am The students completed the movie Drumline in the band room with Mrs. Sorben and some of the visiting senior students from HSSS. They really seemed to enjoy it- I have it on my list to watch this summer.
10:15-10:30am I did a sneaky thing and snuck in some math (Shhhh) under the pretense of being able to win things in store giveaways and contests- for legal and other purposes, contests ask a 'skill testing question' which is usually (more often that not) actually order of operations (knowledge of BEDMAS)
Enter to win this BBQ but first solve this (10x5+100)/ 3-25
(I stole that skill testing question from a local grocery store called Nesters- the slash represents divide I just couldn't do the division sign on the blog!)
correct answer=25 or 150/3=50-25=25
Would you have been eligible to win?
Until recess time, the students tried about 8-10 skill testing questions AND they were relatively quiet as their brains worked to remember the order of operations- priceless!
This goes to show me again that if there is something in it for them (even if it is pretend) they can concentrate better than usual. I'll try to remember that next year!
11- 11:15
We visited the Gr 4 science fair in Mrs. Fanzega's class.
11:15-11:45 We discussed our lunch menu for tomorrow and reviewed the schedule for the park as we are splitting into two lunch groups during noon to 2pm which is when I have use of the BBQ (unfortunately not the one at Nester's)
We did some mind bender puzzles and the students were actually pretty quick on them as they pointed out they are now familiar with them:
mce mce mce= three blind mice- no i's!!!
me nt= apartment
ice3= ice cube
etc.
next we ate lunch early as we are leaving for the high school at 12:10 during our normal lunch time
This afternoon we headed to Don Ross and the students met the other grade seven students that they will be attending school with next year. The new principal, Mr. Pascuzzi addressed them and they met the staff and the leadership students who led tours of the school and its various classrooms and program areas. They had a review activity of the school tour and were served a piece of pizza and a drink in the cafeteria area (MPR). Next the Grade 8 Phys Ed. teacher, Mr. Rizun discussed the expectations and appropriate shoes/clothing for classes next year. The vice Principal, Ms. Ross did the same for behavior expectations.
On the back to the busses, each teacher was given a box of freezies for the students when we returned to our own schools. We don't allow eating on our school busses so it was a nice incentive for them to get back to class quickly when we returned to Squamish Elementary! We returned at 2:55pm.
I have some DRS school locks to practice the locker combination skills next week :)
Being back in class before dismissal also allowed me to do quick reminders about our fieldtrip tomorrow :)
3pm dismissal with a BIG freezie in hand!!
FYI
There will be no blog post tomorrow Friday (I won't be home to Squamish until approx. 7pm)
I have the student's individual Gr8 timetables and will be copying them and sending one in their year end report card and giving the other to them on Monday with their term 3 grades.
Awards Day is Monday June 27th at 1pm- this will be a K-7 assembly and at that time only the top four awards will be presented to Gr 7. Other presentations will be in the classrooms throughout the week.
Report cards will be distributed on Wednesday, June 29th during the hour when students are at school in the morning.
Have a great weekend and thanks to my parent volunteers who are travelling with me tomorrow- see you all at 9am. I'm now off the the store to buy our lunch!!
Mrs. J.
