Late entry tonight. Once again I had a meeting after school from which I arrived home at 6pm. I'd really like to encourage anyone who thinks I have a 9-3 easy, peasy cushy job to come spend a week or two with me!
Today was one of those days that the less said the better. I am truly not over it yet and therefore not fit to reflect rationally on the day's multiple surprises and twists. I'll get a good sleep tonight and try again tomorrow!
Thanks for understanding :)
Homework
Novel as it has been all week- students not at Ch 11-15 have tonight to get their act together or complete it all this weekend
Reminders
Students need to remember their Hot Lunch orders and payment tomorrow
Scholastic Book Fair April 29th - May 5th
General Day
After collecting popcorn money and hot lunch orders, we were immediately summoned to the class picture session.
The photographer was very entertaining and did a great job of setting up a good class picture :)
Novel time was provided in class and I am happy to report that the majority of students are burning up the activities and seems to be enjoying the novel that they chose. I really want to give a big shout out to Raiden- way to go- impressive stuff. Thanks.
Of course there are a few that try as I may, try as I might I can't get them to read consistently or complete any of the activities. I have made the effort to differentiate the activities so that some are friendly for the ESL students, some are better suited to my students who need adaptations and others are more on the creative side- not chapter after chapter of boring literal comprehension questions but a variety of personal (hopefully thoughtful) responses.
I thought one student was listening to the novel on CD but today (by accident) I discovered that said student had actually switched the listening centre to the local radio station! Clever, huh?
at 10 am 11 of my 'honours Band' students left for the trip to the Music Mania extravaganza at Brackendale Elementary
I took the rest to the computer Lab where they prepared their Day 2 virtual adventure journal entry - touring the city of Athens (point form). Mrs Paxton supervised them there once they were settled.
Library: Sneak peek of the Scholastic Book program that will be running from tomorrow to May 5th.
Art time- sounds easy but I was hopping and the students did their best (most) to follow instructions but let's just say that skills with measurement, glue and scissors with this group are in the 'still developing' stage! And the mess...Still, it was productive time and well used. :) Nice to have 18!
DEAR time - even with 18 students in class it was a strange mix of fully engaged readers and the handful who continue to creatively defy the expectations. Reading skills can only improve if they are used to read - the irony of the challenged reader!
I provided another half hour of art time today to allow the students to finish and clean up for 2pm. But for some the extended time was not a good idea. Live and learn Mrs. J.
At 2pm the band fieldtrip students returned and the reaction in the class was quite unexpected- I didn't see it coming- some jealousies perhaps? We grew back to our 29 students. It wasn't an easy transition!
The atmosphere changed and the last hour was not my/our best hour by any means.
However, I abandoned the personal planning lesson and decided instead to do some "Brain Teasers" by group to allow my self some distance from my growing impatience with the usual suspects and that worked out well- better than me trying to force a lesson that was being interefered with and interrupted.
Some have too much to say at all the wrong times!
The students did well with the brain teasers although I am not sure how much they 'enjoyed' them. I needed to think of something to do fast and the Brain Teasers worked and got us all out of a 'funky' spot. I did apologize the the students who were upset by the quick change of focus but most seemed okay with it.
3pm Dismissal saved us all :)
Have a decent evening- 6pm Canucks vs Nashville
Woo Hoo
Mrs. J.
