Today was frustrating for many reasons so I'll keep it short and sweet. I don't want to start whining and telling stories out of school. I actually read this weekend that a teacher in the states was fired for her comments on her Blog - can't be too careful on a public forum when people's darling children are concerned!!
Homework
Unit 20 spelling and Unit 20 activity test Thursday March 3rd
Student names are on the board for the Unit 17-19 activities not yet received!!
Science- the Chapter 7 review and booklets are still owing- again, names of the students who are still 'owing' are on the board. Also, those not complete the Plates map for science please finish it this evening.
I have encouraged the students to attempt one or two more math example assignments on the Algebra review booklet they received today (but I won't hold my breath on that as it was apparently too challenging for an in class review!)
Tracy, Trixton and Quin- still time to hand in some socials project evidence before the end of the week
General Day
Started by welcoming our new student from the Philippines, John (a friend for Antonio :)
Last week before Term 2 reporting period- students are aware that work that they wish to have assessed prior to the report needs to be in by Thursday March 4th. Report cards will be completed this weekend and are due into the office on Monday March 7th.
Returned Unit 19 spelling results and activity
Prepped Unit 20 for Thursday and disributed the Unit 20 activity- this is the last formal spelling test for this term (and this year- I begin formal grammar, vocabulary and written language instruction in Term 3)
SRA reading lab - independent reading progress on comprehension and vocabulary/language work connected to the reading selection.
This week, Monday and Wednesday will be the last couple of chances to complete the selections for term 2 reporting on achievement after that the Reading lab will only be used for those students who wish to work on improving their reading 'placements' during independent (DEAR) reading time.
Term 3 will be a return to class novels - there will be a choice for students and two separate novels will be studied.
Math- Algebra review- seemed I made the review too challenging- perhaps the few days break that we took after the FSA hasn't helped. However, I was sure that the examples that I chose were an overview of the Algebra unit. I thought the students would be able to handle it BUT tomorrow I need to take a different approach and we will do the examples together until the structure is second nature. It really takes practice like anythng!.
Behaviourally today was challenging too- a number of students were unable to focus on anything other than entertaining one another and that also had a negative impact on the ability of the students to concentrate on math today!! Hormones? Maybe, but I can't let excuses for poor impulse control ruin the learning opportunities of other students.
DEAR time - took a long time to settle and even then I had to send a couple of students out to calm down the rest. The time became a bit more productive once the behaviour of a few students was addressed!!
I am still encouraging students to use the DEAR time as a quiet work/study session if they are behind in any work- some can handle that others not so much!! It is a good 30 minute chunk and lots can be accomplished if the will is there!
Mapping: Mountains of the World activity
Did you know that Mount McKinley is the third highest mountain in the world?
Set up for the Phys. Ed. fitness circuit (a challenge with 30 students) 7 stations approx 4 per station.
Took so long to get it organized on Day 1 that the students only managed to complete 4 of the 7 stations!! Hopefully tomorrow will be better and we will complete a full circuit- we are supposed to be able to compelte it twice in a 30 minute period with 2 minutes at each station.
However, even with only 4 stations, it is so easy to see how many students need to build up their stamina!!
Dr Hister's recent address at the Pro D day last Friday had one very scary statistic (the others were just scary!!) The very scary statistic was that this generation of children (ours) are 80% likely to develop type 2 diabetes and not outlive their parents (us)!! Ouch. Check out the Canadian Diabetic Association website.
Anyway, I would like to think we can help at school by providing daily exercise, thoughtful snacks at the veggie program and some instruction on our society's not so healthy eating habits. The most important imapct on students health habits of course is at home with parental guidance on diet and exercise.
3pm Dismissal
I am grateful Monday is over- I look forward to a better day tomorrow.
Have a warm evening.
Mrs. J.
