Welcome back to the 2011 part of the school year (Jan. 4th, 2011)

Feels strange to be back at the computer screen but it is good to be back to school- I have had a refreshing break and I am ready to forge ahead with the grade seven year.

We had a productive Tuesday and it looks like the forcast snow is now gently falling outside - it's very tiny and crystal like so hopefully I won't have to shovelout my vehicle to get home!!

Homework is minimal
Spelling Unit 12 (test either Thursday or Friday- the students have a choice of day as it is a short week)

Bring back all text and socials research notes to class for a progress check and THIS WEEK we will be moving from taking notes to writing the notes into proper paragraphs (the whole project is due in 2 weeks on Monday 17th)

I returned the last week of December math tests today so perhaps ask your son or daughter how they managed

General Day
We started the day off after our Happy New Year greetings with a look and analysis of the 12 words for Spelling Unit 12 (the first unit of the new year)
the students had a 'double puzzle' acitivity using the words- letter of the words are scrambled and once the students unscramble them they have a hidden message to decipher using certain letters- some students are so good at their skills of deduction that theya re able to complete the puzzle without having completed the word scramble section (either that or my hidden messages are very LAME!)

BAND was next- I get the feeling that there was not a great deal of practice over the break!!

For math today I returned and we reviewed the unit on transformations which was completed during the last week of school. I need to provide the students with more practice on the 'matter of elimination' skills that can help with doing multiple choice tests- honestly, multiple choice is not as easy as it looks and the choices can sometimes confuse the test taker. I always remember a teacher once telling me that in multiple choice your first guesstimate is usually correct and that the mistake many students make is to go back and second- guess and change the first instinct answer!! It takes practice.

We completed our morning with approx. 30 minutes of the SRA reading lab program just to get back into the procedure.

Silent Reading after lunch gave me a chance to distribute the New Year Teen Reading Club choices from Scholastic/ A reading record for January will not be issued until next Monday. Some students were beginning to show signs of tiredness!!

Chapter 5 socials text is all about Egypt- I used the chapter today to 'showcase' how much information can be found in the class text especially if students are behind on their research in specific areas. We skip/skim read different sections to remind all students what the main researcha reas of the projects are.

Physical Education
Basketball- dribbling and passing skills- a drill that used every student in class as an 'opponent' to be dribbled past and as students completed a figure eight, they passed to the next student in line and then ran to the end of the line to completed the drill for all team memebers in groups of 5 (there were 25 of us today so it worked out well)

Art
Egyptian hieroglyphs- we wrote our names today in cartouches using the hieroglyphic pictures that the Egyptians used. They will be added to our 'Egyptian profiles' which we will be starting tomorrow. Soon we will be able to 'walk like Egyptians' down the hallway (or at least put up our artists rendition of what we might have looked like as Egyptians.
Pack up and gathering of instruments before 3pm dismissal.
Great first day back- get more sleep and see you all for more fun and excitement tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
