General Day
Driving to school today I was saddened to hear on CBC that once again BC has hit for the 7th year in a row the WORST child poverty in the country- meaning that 1 in 7 of our youngest live below the poverty line.
My father always said when I was growing up in Scotland that the only real currency to beat poverty was a good education- the students and I had a quick think about how a good education can help break the poverty cycle. It was interesting.
I had intended to begin the reading lab but with the shortened day I thought that we would be more productive to work on a language/vocabulary activity but some of the clues were a bit 'dated' and I had to give clues but I think we enjoyed trying to fit the words into a crossword 'cube'.
For math I returned the coordinate point identification practise sheet and we reviewed the skill that many students had difficulty completing properly. The skill of identifying points is good- the difficulty is plotting them accurately on a graph and answering questions that will be incorrect if the point are not accurate.
Next we started a design graph using a review of Prime numbers to complete the ordered pairs. We strted the plotting and the students have to complete it for homework.
Computers- Virtual Adventure research- using accurate key words to narrow Internet searches we took some time to allow the students to check out the countries and places they would like to have a grand adventure. We also discussed web site validity- up to date information and reliable sources for prices and information.
DEAR time - some students helped set up the gym for the craft fair. General reminder was given out about the MP3 prize for completed reading logs for November and December based on the reading being done at home and in class during reading time each day.
With a half hour left to early dismissal we practised the lyrics to our class Christmas song- the students have good strong voices- it sounded pretty good for a couple of runs through it.
2pm dismissal
into parent-teacher interviews- need to get back to tehm actually .
See you either tonight or in class tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
