It's November already- How did that happen? It's getting darker too. Waaahhh!!

Pre-test Socials activity use Ch2 and pre-test results to prep for Wed Nov 3rd test on archaeology and artifacts
Overdue Haunted Houses (remember the French labels on house parts and halloween motifs) and Halloween booklet for French (mots croisees and mots cherchez)
image activity for Ch 11-15 (The Giver)
Reminders
time for completing Term 1 activities is NOW- in eight school days I have to assess the learning outcomes for Term 1 reports
Family groups tomorrow
leave the majority of your halloween candies at HOME please!! (or else!!!)
When I was a sweet young thing many moons ago, I remember that Halloween was for 'doing a wee turn' at the doorsteps of neighbours (we sang or told a joke or even recited a poem) and in return we would receive roasted peanuts in their shells, apples (candy apples were a real treat) and what we called ha'penny (half penny carmels). There was one old lady who always gave a selection of candied fruit and everyone wanted to impress her but she was quite brutal in her assessment of our performance skills- if your costume didn't come up to her standard or your joke wasn't funny - "No, fruit for you. Bye, Bye"
Why this trip down memory lane?
You would not believe (or maybe you would!!) the amount of chocolate and candy that was comsumed today- the custodian commented on the garbage can contents- thank you to the parent who sent a carrot :) Lunch bags oozed candy! Do not try to tell me there is no connection between sugar comsupmtion and behaviour- you should have been a fly on the wall for my volleyball skills lesson this afternoon. Oh my...
I have given the students a day's 'grace' and then tomorrow I ask that they either keep it home or bring a couple of pieces only for snack or lunch and eat it at the appropriate time. Believe me when I say I don't need any more candy in my life (there is a whole basket left over at my house) BUT I will confiscate it if I have to and they can retrieve it at the end of the day.
General Day
Spelling
Return Unit 6 & prep Unit 7 using a wordrearch activity after word analysis and a close up look at the patterns in this unit - it will be tested Thursday (the last one for the first term)
Return Pre-test question results for Socials Ch2 - the students had a chance to use the text to add the missing details to their answers to 'beef up' their study notes for the test on Wed Nov 3rd (topic: archaeology, scientific technology and artifacts) The same questions will be asked on Wed's test so everyone has the opportunity to prep and 'ace' the test this week.
Math -BEDMAS- in class check on basic understannding of the rules and application of them- request #1 that students MUST show their working and thinking so I can correct where some are getting into difficulty.
Managed to pinpoint and assist students who needed a bit more explanation with the help of a small group pull out this pm. Thank-you Ms. Barlas :)
In day due to the RAIN - thanks to Mr. P for doing a volleyball practise at lunch :)
DEAR time- did allow some students to complete some assignments that are so close to being done! I interrupted a bit by completing a math skills check on the students I didn't see before lunch.
French was a bit of a battle today!!!? Sugar crash??? The Halloween activities are now overdue. We started a review activity of the words and numbers that we have been using all year (from Gr 5!!!) for days, months and went over some basic questions - perhaps it was the wrong activity for a Monday. The words I write every day en francais are day, month, weather and holiday related and I thought (perhaps wrongly) that the students hearing them everyday might create some kind of recollection of the 'patterns' and similarities.
Personal Planning- we looked at the needs inventory we did last week - the big question is how do we meet those needs? We discussed the difference between aggressive, assertive and passive personalities. Our goal is to find a balance in knowing what we need and meeting those needs appropriately in class, social situations and at home.
Phys Ed. By this time my students were quite literally vibrating- we did a carousel of voilleyball skills- partners to groups of four, six and eight. We practiced control over our ball passes and teamwork. For some it was a major effort just to remember the whistle codes (2 blasts -stop and listen- hold equipment!!! 1 blast start the skill- how hard is that?)
Pack up- homework and planners.
3pm dismissal- gotta love a Monday after Halloween LOL
Take Care
Mrs. J.
