My...my, even with a weekend's rest some of us are still a little 'grumpy'- I'm so glad 'looks don't kill' 'cos I think I might not be around for long. lol
Homework
Well, folks, this is it- last week for formal assessment- mainly students who have missed lessons and classes are the ones who have this week to fly through the work- they know who they are and I have sat down with each of them- I just can't MAKE them do it!!
Some students have asked to see the 'master' list of collected assignments which I keep just to be sure they are not missing anything- I am so proud of them for caring in June and want to encourage them to do this in high school too. Report cards should NOT be new news (a former principal at the high school used to describe resports cards as Nx3 = No New News!).
General Day
Started with K vocabulary words- good job was done by all groups - some had to go back and work at placing the words into the correct sentences.
I had a fabulous idea (in the shower this morning!!) about how to get through the reamaining vocabulary assignments in a fun way so tomorrow each group is only going to get 1 worksheet each for L,M,N,O and P and we are going to jigsaw - each group will be responsible for a specific letter and then different students from each group will 'tour' other groups to bring back two words at a time where they will be checked and placed (if correct of course) into the blanks on the worksheets.I have no idea if it will work or if I am just setting myself up for a ccraaazy morning but I am going to try it anyway and then I'll know. Stay tuned...
Next we did a journal writing session which I do every year regarding the end of the year reflections and awards. I ask the students to give me feedback on some of the changes we have made over the last couple of years to the Awards distributed and then to name (they can't put themselves down) up to five students in our class or our grade that they think are deserving of recognition for the year.I find the students very honest and accurate and it helps when we meet to discuss the Intermediate awards.
early snack and music after recess with Mrs. McPhee
I returned Friday's Math review of the Mean, Medium, Mode and Range and we discussed it using the textbook examples to focus on- results for the review were encouraging and many students did a good job. Only have a few that need to go over the arithmetic process and a couple who I'd like to see complete a redo ( another couple not there Friday so their marks for that review are not Outliers (seeing we are studying it I thought it might be useful to use it as an example of what an outlier can do to data collection!!)
DEAR time- usual suspects having a difficult time settling- I 'managed' to split them up enough to finally get some 'peace' for everyone!!
Social Studies- final reflection/review of the big ideas associated with ancient Greek civilization and the parallels that exist today in Canadian society. The text book helped with the focus and we read a bit and discussed a bit- very easily off topic however!! (I still don't know why we ended up talking about a movie called The Gods Must be Crazy it might be relevant- or not!)
Computers ended our day and I managed to stream the next 10 minutes of Consuming Kids Part 2 in which the FDA is given unrestricted access to market to children under Ronald Reagan's presidency (hailed as a business and marketing industry hero). The increase in 'Children's Spending' from thje early 1980's on is exponential. The concept of product placement and marketing within children's shows and video games was covered in this section.
I was surprised that the students clapped after the video was over (I'm not sure if they clapped because it meant they could get back to 'free time' or if they actually enjoyed the video???) I am going to be delusional and say it was due to the latter!! lol
It's June, I can make myself feel better!!!
BTW the new Insight program on the teacher's computer is a great bonus for teachers and students alike. I have to remember to thank the PAC for funding it.
Dismissal came fast at 3pm
