Monday again!

Hi - happy summer solstice June 21st :)

My students want to know why they are not off school already now that it is officially 'summer time'!! They do have a point.

Friday June 18th was our annual 'Sports Day' which we did this year in our 'family groups' (K-7) which is a first for our school. It was a bit different from past years and depending on who you talk to there are different perspectives on the format. We were lucky to have a decent rainfree day for it and the majority of the students enjoyed themselves.

No homework
Reminders: I am still waiting for 2 permission forms for DRSS and a letter about a possible 'picnic' on Thursday went home with students today as did an invitation to our annual pancake breakfast this Friday.

Today we welcomed the UBC researchers who brought their survey to our school for the intermediate students to complete. We are participating in a National research study on school climate. They were very complimentary of our school and said they felt welcomed and enjoyed our students which is something to feel proud of as they have been to many schools in B.C. administering the survey.

General Day
UBC survey- students who did not return permission forms to complete the survey completed a math worksheet and read. I was impressed with the serious way our students read and completed the form. Isaac won a $20 gift card for Chapters book store. Congratulations.

Dear time after lunch was very frustrating - my mistake was providing them with a 'treat' first (I thought it would keep them quiet) instead it made them (well, a small group) more hyper than they were before lunch!!
"the best laid plans..."

Personal Planning- with the news today of Mrs Hoyrup's new grandson (born in Maple Ridge 11 days early) it was a perfect segueway into completing our unit with the signs of labour and birth of a baby.

computers:
Part 3 of Consuming Kids (You Tube) today the focus of the documentary was the viral nature of children's products and advertising placement on such toys as Webkins stuffies and shows that promote websites which can individually 'target' your child's interests and 'infiltrate' their home life. It also looked at educational resources and 'sponsorships'. It is particularly problematic in the US where they can have school cafeterias selling Wendy's and Taco Bell. However, we are not immune to this issue in Canada but particularly in BC (District 48) we have made an effort to limit as much as we can the branding of the materials and sources we offer the students. It is very difficult.

back in class just before the dismissal bell a form for Flapjack Friday and a letter regarding the Wednesday 'picnic' were distributed.

Need to get my homework done now- the report cards need to be printed- apparently my printer at home is considered 'ancient' technology!! Go figure- it is increasingly difficult to find those big clunckers of ink cartridges for it!!

See everyone tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
