We are so lucky with this beautiful weather. My sister contacted me from Thunder Bay, Ontario recently and was saying how bad the rain is! I feel like this is spring-like weather with the cool mornings and evenings and the sunny days. I intend to remember it when the weather finally does go sour!! Remind me!
Did you see the moon too? Explains a few things- like the hair on my palms (lol)
Had a tiring but busy and productive day in class. Homework is very similar to the work posted yesterday.
Homework tonight
Reader's response #3 overdue as of Monday (still have about 10 t0 get)
Spelling test for Unit 3 Thursday Oct 8th - study for it
Novel- have chapters 18-20 read for Thursday (we will be looking at response #4 guidelines tomorrow)
There is an extra day for the Math puzzle and the map as I did not collect them today
Reminder to decide on a picture package and a t-shirt order (if interested)
General class activity
When I have been away for just a day, I feel like I have to work extra hard to get caught up with the routines. I need to work with the students on a couple of general issues like organization of their papers and desks and we need a system for holding students who are routinely not getting things done in class (or at home) accountable.
I would be open to hearing any of your ideas for what you feel is needed at home or from school. There will always be a few students who need continual reminders and I do realize that the number of parents this blog reaches is minimal. What to do?
Today we took time for language: spelling and a quick grammar activity- what is a sentence?
I asked for a journal entry on their ideas for our carnival's haunted house and provided reading time. They had some time for the Dans la Classe posters for French and we worked in groups on a couple of different FSA type math problems (I have been impressed with their work). One big issue is the transference from group to independent understanding- that we are still working on but generally the math problem solving is impressive.
After P.Ed. we discussed (personal planning) the types of roles we need to bring to groups and group activities to make them work and be a worthwhile learning experience for all students. I am beginning to notice some minor dysfunction of some students in working together. I will address the seating but want to foster a community in class in which students can and will work with everyone at different times- just like the real world we may not always like a task or our task partners but the more important lesson is to focus on the task at hand an cooperate together to learn(our word of the week: cooperate).
We rounded our day out with some art time and clean up. Hope everyone has a good evening. Tonight is my first ladies curling game and I am nervous (I haven't played since April) but looking forward to a new season and a new team. I'll let you know
See you tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
