Wednesday night April 23rd

I am struggling to keep up this blog daily with so much going on during and after school. It is 9pm and I am not long home. I tried the blog at Starbucks again tonight as it is math tutor night for my son but wouldn't you know it, the earthquake off the coast (6.7 magnitude Campbell River) had everyone all abuzz and it was difficult to concentrate with the lights swinging and the nauseous feeling that affects balance. Besides everyone was chatting about it ....just yesterday the PAC orders came in for my classroom emergency supply kit so good timing ....we need to be ready for more than just the sway of lights!
Did you feel it?

Reminders
The letters for potential fundraising in May and a supply list for camp went home today with most students (some left them on their desks!)
Thanks to everyone for getting in those camp forms - we are in good shape for numbers and hope that things will go without interruption
The project that we are involved in with the HSSS and Mr. Parker's class is planning a May 15th celebration of our work and I am just putting out feelers about the possibility of our families contributing to a 'heritage dish' based pot luck (more on that later)

Our day
We spent the first part of the morning at HSSS with the grade10 art class in which we paired up and completed a neat activity with haiku poetry - our students created 5-7-5 syllable poems on the topic of celebrating diversity and the grade 10 art students created a visual for the same theme. Then the students switched and the grade 6/7 took the visuals and created a poem to complement the drawing. at first I wasn't sure how it would go with the time constraint but I must report how proud I was of the collaboration! the results were very encouraging and some of the poems were profound and moving.

The visuals were also impressive.
We headed back to class and just before morning break we completed the morning 'housekeeping' which included a closer look at the Math Ninja problems which are being tracked and a look at the camp letter.

Math switch did happen today (yay)
With the project and the breaks we have had a bit of a routine shake up.
The grade sevens reviewed several skills including graphing positive and negative coordinates, determining the larger number using integers, finding the areas and circumferences of circles using some puzzle sheets.
Then we looked at the relative ease of adding and subtracting fractions given the same denominator and began to consider the next step for adding and subtracting fractions when the denominators are different- we will follow that up tomorrow Ch 6 in the text.

I know the grade sixes are having some math fun with boxes of Smarties and data skills.

Read to self - much better today :)
I think the students needed the time to get into a story or at least a self interest activity!!
While they read today I prepared the resources needed for an upcoming science lab.

Physical education - floor hockey
interesting dynamics I personally find the boys to be too aggressive in their play and the girls half interested in the unit and the skills  - happy to move onto track and field soon - maybe some baseball as the weather improves over the next few weeks.
Sure hope the weather improves as it was a real mixed bag today- we had a little of everything except snow although did you notice the new snow on the mountains today?

Back in class we did a science activity about the chemistry of the kitchen and the most used everyday resources that help magic happen in baking. The students did a good job of identifying the scientific names of vinegar, lemons, salt, sugar, pepper etc
We watched the science of the kitchen with a short video featuring Steve Spangler and his experiments from the Ellen show recently.

Before we knew it- time to pack up - I will follow up with the coffee mate lab in the next couple of days- did you know there is no milk derivative of any kind in the product called 'coffee mate' and that it is one of the most flammable substances consumed daily as an additive to coffee?

Have a good sleep! No coffee or 'coffee mate' before bed!!
Mrs. J.
