Friday Oct 11th

The day whizzed by so fast I feel dizzy!!

Quick one tonight as I have to run ...

no new homework or practice or reminders except to say there is no school Monday (have a great Thanksgiving long weekend)

Our day

science safety instruction and contract signing
instruction on first aid, hazardous materials and handling for chemistry, protocals on eating, smelling sunbstances and clothing for safety in labs and finally handling and clean up of equipment.

I have a class set of safety goggles, a first aid station complete with eye wash and skin cleansers in case of accidental spills. All labs will start with specific information about what materials will be used and what safety procedures to follow. Step by step lab instructions will be issued and the students will each have a role in the TEAM.

Today we made and discussed various roles and I made a list of preferred roles to form science lab teams. We are a bit heavy on the 'first aid' role so will need to space out into other roles for even numbers!!! Good to know that they are so safety conscious!!
Roles: first aid or safety coordinator, equipment gopher, sequence coordinator, clean up master and materials/lab report supervisor

These roles in our science TEAMs (together everyone achieves more) will hopefully result in our labs being successful

then we took a brain break and tried some brain teasers called Wordles (the students caught on very quickly) I love these puzzles using language as they challenge the left and right side of our brains (visual and analytical).

Math Quiz
#4 adding and subtracting decimals
FSA style problem solving - chart making or creating a table
The challenge: find all the ways that you can make 55 cents exactly (no pennies) from a choice of nickles, dimes and quarters

read to self
record

Rock Candy lab - oh my, many thanks to Mrs. Wolfe for her expertise with the boiling water and assistance with the materials and end products. Hopefully this time the experiment will work and get a head start with a long weekend to let the crystals form in peace - more later if you are interested in the 'recipe' that we followed.
The good news us that even though I had to cpomplete a couple of containers after school- no one was injured, boiled or burned :) or went without a rock candy experiment- fingers crossed that they will work like magic. Cannot believe the amount of sugar we went through in this one. More later- I'll post nexst week on the progress (or lack thereof)

Last year all we got was mould!!! So this year I have 'protected' the containers with cling film with enough of a hole to also allow some air to circulate.

one chapter of Word Nerd (Ch 14) and we were ready for a long weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Mrs. J.
