Reminders
Tonight the Tom Lee company is here at the school for rental of instruments
Band class tomorrow
Verification forms for the school district - still to get 15
Classroom communication forms - still to get 10 (I will make some new copies for students tomorrow apparently the form disappeared into thin air!)
Home practice
math 7 have asked the students to try the Divisibility worksheet tonight- the tricks are explained on the worksheet but it might take a bit of reading to follow - just try and we will look at in more detail tomorrow
Our day
Phys Ed today I introduced the students to a 5 station fitness circuit which we worked through for half of our gym time. Everybody participated well and made an effort to follow the directions and exercise safely and consistently at each station.
Stations: skipping, crunches, hula hoops, figure eight backward/forward movement and medicine ball wall squats.
The other half of class we played a cooperative game that somehow turned into a competitive play with aggressive comments like 'just crush him' or 'kill her'. I took exception to this and requested a friendlier, safer mentality for our Physical Education classes this year. I believe it might come from the wrestling mentality but even so this is school not MMA combat!
My goals for this year in Physical Ed. are
1. Inclusion - encourage participation and fun activities
2. Maintain safety and proper use of equipment
3. Increase overall fitness levels
Back in class we looked at the different ways to learn (learning styles) and the students completed a number of statements to determine what mode of learning style they seem to prefer. More on that later.
Math 7 today we organized our binders by the Index which we found collectively challenging !! It was like herding cats to try to get everyone to follow the index to number and organize their binders. Oh my!
Then I checked only two of 22 students had managed to complete the practice for division!!
Small rant about actually improving basic skills by actually doing some practice!!
We reviewed the traditional algorithm on the board and students copied three of the six I expected before they set about doing a couple for themselves. Head's up that this is the skill being featured on this week's Math quiz - from the class worksheet.
A Divisibility Rules activity was distributed but we didn't have much time - asked them to try it for tomorrow.
Read to self- reading record sheets distributed for students to log their progress.
Shared the diagnostic reading and spelling results with the students
Science texts were distributed and we looked at the three grade 6 units and their parallels with the grade seven 7 units. Grade six: Diversity of Life, Electricity and Extreme environments
Grade Seven: Ecosystems, Chemistry and Earth Science.
After a chapter of Word Nerd read aloud we completed planners and packed up for the day
Busy Monday - they were getting a bit restless by the end of the day.
Have a dry evening. I have resorted to my I-pad to complete the post tonight.
More tomorrow.
