Sunny Monday Sept. 10th

A busy and productive day in our class

Homework and Reminders
  • grade six students have a math patterns worksheet to complete if they did not finish in class
  • think about a possible class slogan (motto) for this year
  • grade seven students have a Math 7 program brochure and information sheet to give to parents
  • please bring the necessary school supplies (it helps get the organizational aspect of the class established) and $10 for the planner that was distributed today
Class Today: what we accomplished
house keeping
preliminary seating plan in place five groups of four and one of three
supplies into bins (approx. half of the students have their supplies thank-you for providing them)
school planners were distributed (payment can follow this week)
sign up for citizenship opportunities around the school

daily French: I always begin the day with a greeting, the date and the current weather in French- that way the students get to hear high frquency words every day and wiol come to recognize the patterns and the vocabulary soon :)

returned the All About You activity from Friday for students to complete and review. I answered some questions the students had about me like how long I had been teaching and where and about Scotland and whether or not I dyed my hair :)

Spelling diagnostic: I use these diagnostic tools to determine where the students are at before I plan a program for the year. The research shows that spelling and reading levels correlate (are similar) and can provide a clearer snapshot of the level a student is most confident reading currently.

displayed the outcomes of the Friday "Charter" activity for the students to review- we will be continuing the process of creating our class agreements and 'Charter' this afternoon

after snack (and a recess) we switched into Math 6 and Math 7 program classes
Gr6 to Mr. Parker
Gr7 to me (can you believe I started the program today with five students away!!)

Math 7 introduction to the program, the text mathlinks 7 and the management and organization needed for a class which is coming and going to different classes (like which door to come in and what was needed).
The students worked on a Math text scavenger hunt intending to familiarize them with the various sections and parts of the text book. We used the overhead to check out the on-line and some helpful websites for math help beyond the classroom.
Finally we discussed some ways to be successful in Math and a newsletter and brochure was distributed for student to take to their parents with the same information.

silent reading after lunch
I did hand out TRC (Teen Reaidng Club) flyers but please know that there is absolutely NO obligation to buy- I use the TRC as a rewards program in the classroom.

Personal Planning : the charter activity- we shared to results and decided which were the top two (or three) of each category to develop the language for our charter. We tried to discuss a class slogan but only one was offered from Casper (which I like: I will, I can, I want to) so I have asked the students to think about slogans and bring some ideas to calss for a vote tomorrow.

Reading Diagnostic- a paragraph comprehension activity to informally determine the level each student is reading at currently. 10 minutes

As a class today we wrote our first planner entry and 'claimed' our planners with names and class numbers.

With 10 minutes to spare we packed up and prepared for dismissal. Once everyone was ready I asked them to look at the samples for three different art projects and chose one for their first project:
either Name Acrostic, Logo Letter or Shoes made for walking- drawing close up sketches of their shoes for a display called these shoes are made for walking...
** the logo letter seemed to be most popuklar but we'll see tomorrow

Dismissal

gotta go get my homework done- soon the students will have thier own to do but right now I am in the midst of determining the appropriate level for this years programs and orgaizing the social and organizational aspects of the class.
