June 20th Wednesday

Today was a more grounded day and BIG surprise... the sun was shining- ya think it might be helpful to have some vitamin D around these parts? What a difference some sunshine makes.
I heard someone yesterday refer to the weather as 'june-u-ary' lol

I have been busy rallying the troops for the 'straggler' assignments encouraging 'something' rather than nothing- hand it all in as is- time is running out for me to asess and report cards are just around the corner like Friday.

today's schedule

language arts
a final journal entry which had the students doing more talking than writing !! (quelle surprise!)
The topic was what we could realistically do together to celebrate our end of year as a class next week. I did get some great ideas and once all the suggestions are in I will post here first and keep you in the know about our class decision(s).

Last Vocab-u-lous E letter worksheet.
I have been  impressed with how quickly the students manage to complete these with a little team work and an Oxford dictionary. The average marks are 8 out of 10.
Did you know that an elver is a baby eel?

Math
I went to the Mathlinks 8 homework and practice book (my son's from his Math 8 course a couple of years ago) and copied a worksheet that parallels our classwork on adding and subtracting fractions. I wanted to show my students that they are already familiar with the work and that they can succeed in math at the next level- it is not a big, scary beast :) We completed the work in class together. Some worked and were more focused than others (duh!!!).
11:30- noon Our last computer session- most have completed their projects and were happy to have some free computer time- let's just say that it wasn't math skills they were practicing!!

MindUp session 3rd of 4 sessions with Mrs. Paxton
Brains in use and synapses in place- today mindful thinking- being optimistic and ready to be flexible over having a fixed mindset and causing stress because things don't always work as planned.
Constant stress causes heightened costisol levels which have been proven to adversely affect the physical body.

Silent Reading

Class have voted for a Monday or Tuesday (weather dependent) walk to Brennan Park where we will have a picnic lunch and some class games in the park. Some want to bring their bikes - I am looking for a few parents that might be brave enough to join us and already have the day or a couple of hours to join us. Potluck is suggested and I'll work on being a bit more specific before Friday.

Phys Ed.
Fresh air- seems like everyone opted to get some fresh air while the rain stays away. The fields around the school were busy (thank goodness we have them- the view of the mountain today was spectacular). It was windy but we didn't notice playing Team Tag and kicking around a soccer ball.

Last 20 minutes (16 to be exact), we started the movie Eragon (2006) which was filmed in the Upper Squamish and on one of my student's great grandma's property. It is a fantasy adventure based on the Inheritance trilogy by author Christopher Paolini (who started writing the stories when he was 15). Myth and magic, dragons and villains, beauty and the beast, sword fighting scenes, spectacular special effects and good over evil everything of a good adventure movie.

Dismissal
Have a nice evening.
Mrs. J.
