Earlier this week, I said that Tuesdays tended to disappear fast- today was another "Where-did-it-go?" Day!!
Happy Mother's Day this weekend.
Homework
nothing new!
I have 17 biography posters and 9 students who are promising it for Monday: Nic, Tesla, Cris, Autumn, Jon, Keanan, Rowan, George and Ashley
Reminders
Next week is a four day week Monday-Thursday and our Long Weekend for Victoria Day means I'll see the students again on May 22nd
Thank you for your support with Camp I now have all except three students signed up to go. I am thankful for that as it is a wonderful day at the Lake (May 28th)
General Day
Science:
Chapter 5 classifying materials (homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures)
Text work- reading and activities completing definitions and identifying the variety of ingredients or materials in everyday products (shampoo, window cleaner, milk, juice crystals).
I think the students were a little amazed by all the additives to different products. It is really crazy to look at the back of a shampoo bottle and try to read all the chemicals that make up products we use on a daily basis. Wait until we look at the chmicals and preservatives in our food products!
Computer Session BC Science 7 website for the ch 5.1 quiz and a look at the internet connects (cool things to see and do). There are really neat interactive web sites of the Periodic Table of the Elements.
Some time was also offered for Spend a Million and the graphing activites incomplete for math7.
Math 7
With all the 7's together I was able to have a poll about sports day and who would like to be part of the running of stations versus who wants to be a participant. Of 28 students, 19 want to participate and 9 would prefer to help with the set up, stations and counting of points. Statistics in action!
Next I took the opportunity to show the students a variety of very helpful websites for math practise. Many students (and parents) ask what kinds of things can be set up to help math marks.
Honestly, the major one at this level is coming to class ready to learn which means paying attention to the instructio, having the homework or practise set in class either completed in class (or at home). Other factors that will make a huge difference are willingness to study for tests and work on the concepts that are weak. For working on concepts that are weak, students need to pay attention to what was incorrect on their reviews or activites.
Today I shared the Drexel University (Dr Math Forum), the Math.com website and the Coolmath4kids using our interactive overhead. There are approx 30 useful websites with links to all of these on the MathLinks7 website under the General Web Links option. There is also an on-line parent centre although I find it ironic that the 'provincial resources' page links you to Alberta and Manitoba (really?). If you would like to see the complete set of B.C. Learning outcomes for the MAth 7 curriculum chexk out the IXL website under the BC provincial curriculum (it goes up to B.C. Math 9).
At 11:30 on a Friday we switched things up as some of my students wanted to make cards for mother's day (how can I refuse?)
So, a few went to assist Ms. Sorban and the rest used the scrapbooking materials and set to create cards and messages for their moms. It was fun to watch them and suggest some embellishements.
Silent reading time was used for a number of activites:
Complete mother's day cards, decorate kites (we have a class set of kites and step one is to decorate before we fly them), read, complete the incomplete work that has been due ALL WEEK!!
The intermediate staff were provided the opportunity to meet at 2pm regarding sports day organization as Mrs. Paxton was showing a documentary in the gym called Paperclips
We were back in class in time to review the week and remind those who have promised the overdue work on Monday. Dismissal came soon after ...
Have a great weekend (I have a lot of paperwork to do!!!)
Mrs. J.
