Today was difficult for a number of reasons that I don't want to go into detail about...
Homework
I have asked the students to use the time they have next week to go online and check out the IXL math site which has practice for all the Math 6 and 7 Learning Outcomes
Mathlinks 7 is also an on line learning centre for the Math learning outcomes
Also there is the BC Science 6 and BC Science 7 web site that had quizzes and internet connects for all the science learning we have been recently engaged in
Novels are to be completed for Literature Circles next Thursday
Reminders
BC teachers are withdrawing their services province wide next Monday-Wednesday
There will be no school.
General Day
Science: Density investigation in class this morning. The investigation is outlined in the textbook in Chapter 4 section 4:2 measuring matter page 117.
Students in groups made a chart to predict the rate at which materials would sink or float (or hang around the mid point) of an oil and water mixture.
Once the investigation was completed we left the Density Jars on the back window ledge to see if over a few days any of the materials would become waterlogged enough to change their ranking in the chart.
We then continued our science work in the computer lab by doing the same investigation on line in an applet from the on-line learning site BC Science 7 Ch 4.
Math 7
Today we reviewed the content of the next and last section of the algebra unit review quiz. On that review we will be looking at making expressions from recognising the English wording i.e.
a number increased by ten is equal to 40 translates into x+10 = 40
We will also be solving one and two step equations using the opposite operation.
The review will be one page and 15 questions.
After ensuring everyone knew what they needed to be responsible for studying/preparing for the review next week, we spent a half hour playing various games- connect four, Monopoly, Chess, Checkers etc.
Some students were music buddies for the primary music class.
Silent Reading
Group Creative project time- things are coming along nicely
Ted Talks: our Friday science theme continued with a look at some amazing research on Ted talks by mycologist, Paul Stamets, about how the mycelium fungus (old growth forest mushrooms) and how they can potentially hold the key to 'saving the world'. He outlines his amazing research and experimental results that show the potential for the fungus to clean soil of contaminates, fight viruses, act as insecticide and breakdown neurotoxins in nerve gas among other amazing abilities. Amazing!
I also took a minute to share one of my favourite silly clips called Store Wars which is a very clever take on the organic farm grown food fighting the dark side of big production using the storyline of Star Wars. Check
it out on You Tube.
We then cleaned up and made sure we were all prepared for a few days away from school.
Dismissal.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs. J.
