Thank-you for your patience if you checked the blog for Friday Jan. 27th- I was not at school on Friday and would like to thank my TOC, JM. for being there in my stead. I have been battling the nasty head cold and sinus virus that seems to be doing its rounds. It seems to hold on and recycle itself in my head and throat. I think it is gone and then it pops back up and says"kidding, I'm hanging on. Get more Fisherman's Friends!" (throat lozenges for those who may be wondering).
Anyway, she's baaaack.... and so are our tenacious head visitors. Please be aware that everyone needs to take some important precautions in order that the head lice do not spread. I mentioned it a few weeks ago and it is worth mentioning again
- do not share combs, brushes or headbands
- do not wear others peoples hats, scarves, hoods, jackets or toques
- keep your jacket on your chair or in a plastic bag in the cloakroom
- be aware of how you interact with your peers especially if you are close enough to have heads together in group work
- get your head checked if you are feeling itchy (I am now seriously itchy just writing about it!)
- get proper treatment for their removal
It is so much work to eradicate them (I know, I had to do it for my son and myself a couple of years ago)- remember bedding, pillows cases, pj's, hats, scarves and jackets that have been worn. I think I'll get the school form letter and send it home tomorrow. Thank you in advance for checking your child's head. Sorry- it is that time of year. I used the R&C (hair treatment and there is also a 'house spray)' product with good results and tea tree oil has also been effective for maintenance.

Today's general day (Monday)
Spelling analysis of the spelling tricks and demons for this week's set (List 7) some words are four syllables and today we looked at breaking down the sounds and 'sections' of the longer words like 'conscientiously' to help with the word-letter study. The most common errors are usually a mix up of an 'a' or an 'e' or a double letter combination.
The list 5 redo went well and all raised their initial achievement. The students raised their general average on the last test list (list 6) after we brought the importance of study back to the forefront. I thought it was a challenging list but a little bit of coaching and a little bit of 'elbow grease' seems to have done the trick. Good job everyone.
Time to complete the science work incomplete on Friday. If students had completed it, they worked on their Letter paragraphs- they are pretty good- I guess a little contrived but all in all a decent attempt at something a little unorthodox (that is creating a paragraph that repeats words initial letter to create a sound/image backdrop to the words.
" Belinda was the most beautiful ballerina I had ever seen. She was able to balance on her blocked toes and bound like a deer across the stage..."
Band
Math 7
Follow up to the work on Thursday last week with pre-algebra patterns and t-charts and today we started to exchange variables for numbers and evaluating expressions using variables.
Silent reading
I interrupted silent reading to bring a taster of haggis around to 16 very brave students. Most said it was "Okay" a couple really liked it and asked for a spoonful more and a few tried but didn't finish it but, still, I am impressed that 16 students were brave enough to put a spoonful in their mouths :)
I need to create some memorable certificates now!!
Personal Planning
A look at peer pressure and the role it plays in decisions young people make. Resaercg shows that some of the risks that are taken are driven more by the need to impress one's peers so it really does make a difference who our children 'hang out' with.
Computers
I had the students go to a kidshealth.com website which comes highly recommended for on-line information and advice for teenagers, parents and teachers. Some free time finished the session.
Back in class- we cleared off desks and cleaned up before going over the homework which wasn't much.
Hope you have a nice evening.
Apologies things have been a bit delayed and later than usual.
Mrs. J.
