Sorry for the delay folks. My classroom computer is up to no good so I am posting from home tonight and I still have not become familiar with the new browser but I am at least managing to get this done now. I'll try to make it as painless for all of us as possible!!
Homework
Still nothing brand new...just the assignments that are 'pending':
novel projects (class time available)
science reminded students again to take home their texts!! tomorrow I'll drop names for those who are monitoring :)
Term 2 List 1 spelling test (tomorrow afternoon due to the writing day organized for the morning)
Reminders
Ask your son or daughter for the ski letter which they received today: letter, permission form and volunteer form. I have requested a return by Monday Dec 5th who would like to join us by first to return forms and have a criminal record check on file
Tomorrow is our annual Christmas card writing day- please join us for the morning if you can
General Day today (Wednesday)
Daily French: c'est le dernier jour du novembre. Il fait beau (le soleil est brille) mais c'est froid aussi.
Library visit (missed it on Monday) and the students really needed to check out library books for their socials research. Thanks Mrs. Blackwell, sorry about all the books that were left on the table!!
class time for some library book browsing and note-taking for the socials project
Band
Math
I am so excited to report the results from our Monday quiz (remember I had them do some deep breathing ?) the results blew me away and are very encouraging. Only four students need to redo the quiz based on marks below 50% but the majority of students did very well. Pass/fail rate for this quiz was 85% pass first time (15% below 50%). The test will be redone after the students in question have a chance to go back to the drawing board (instruction) and do some more practice.
I wonder how much the 'breathing' exercise helped. However, I also realize there are many other factors that could have contributed to success on this quiz- still I am encouraged to keep it as a 'settler' before a quiz or review.
Fractions are understandably in need of more time and attention especially figuring out how to bring them from a % (x/100) to a fraction in its lowest terms. However, we have made a great start.
New topic in class today (followed up from yesterday) Cartesian Graphing Plane and vocabulary. Ch 1 text book MathLinks 7 introduction to the concept.
11:30-noon we logged onto the on-line learning centre for MathLinks7 and we played some math games, some tried the quiz (although we are not really ready for that yet) and others wanted to go back to the IXL site that we used last week. I took about 10 minutes to familiarize the students with the e-Numeracy practice that is on-line via the Ministry of Education website under exams. Students can practice and familiarize themselves with the types of general math skill questions they will be asked to do 40 multiple choice for in Jan-Feb 2012.
Silent Reading- some worked diligently on their novel projects, some on science and some on socials- I see it all as text based work which involves reading and I want students who are 'behind; to get themselves up to speed
French- I was surprised how much the student seemed to enjoy this activity which is still in its planning stages- for me it is a double dip (art and French) - the students have to design and plan (dessinez et coloriez ) to fill a refrigerator full of food and find all the French vocabulary for the food items that they decide they want in their fridge. If I can fit in a "find out the cost" that might even be a triple dip (add math skills). Hey, I like that idea. I'm not sure if the students will. Anyway they had fun decideing what was going to go in their fridges :)
Phys Ed. Today we played a basketball by numbers games (line basketball 5on 5). It was interesting at how 'rusty' some skills are. I swear the first round looked like a cross between rugby and basketball! You don't want to know. I like to see general skills before I plan drills and basketball skills to work on. Let's just say, my planning is wide open lol
Back in class we 'unpacked' our gym session and made some observations and perceptions about the game- and what we can work on. The most important thing is that they had fun.
Me? I'm still recovering :) lol
Chapter of our read aloud Word Nerd (now at chapter 8) while the students completed the Trans4mation activity from Tuesday.
Ski letters were distributed and we took time to read over them (a few questions were asked and answered regarding the fieldtrip) and we discussed homework before packing up for the dismissal bell
Have a great evening
Mrs. J.
P.S.
Tuesday Miss B. was my TOC and the schedule was as follows
Spelling activity
Novel project
Socials note-taking research
Math plotting point on a graph activity to create a T-Rex
Silent Reading
Trans4mation word search puzzle- divergent thinking
Phys Ed. split gym for different activities hockey, free choice and basketball
Word Nerd read aloud chapters while completing art/project activities.
According to Miss B's notes about the day, everyone was pretty well-behaved and compliant but she agreed that they were quite noisy. We need to do a bit of work on being more inclusive of one another in our class community. We are still having some issues of friendship and friendliness.
Thank-you Miss B. I appreciate your work. Thank-you for being my TOC
