Thursday, November 17th

I am sitting in the quiet of an empty classroom this lunch hour- thought I'd get another early start on the Blog- if I do get the chance to start it early, I usually finish it after school or from home. I have a meeting at the other end of town after school so if I at least get the homework up, it helps for my parents checking the blog for that purpose :)
Thank you for reading and checking in...

Homework
I love the fact that the bulk of what is for homework is generally completed by today leaving Friday free for 'catch-up'
No new homework for Math7 or Math6
only two overdue reader responses remain (they know who they are and I know where they sit!  :)

Reminders
reminder free yahoo
(except for me. I need to rmeember to send home the ski information for Dec. 14th)

General Day
Daily French today's new words were 'icy' and slippery' (gele and glissant)

Spelling Test #7

writing activity- buliding up complex sentences. Great start ....however, now we need to look at the difference between a single complex sentence and a run-on sentence.
We reviewed the 8 parts of speech and employed many of them in bulding up the sentence 'He cried'
our class sentence became:

On Sam's fifth birthday at Nexen beach, he built a gigantic castle but he cried when it was destroyed by the tide.
Students tried their own and we had many creative and amazing complex sentences; unfortunately, many of them were run-ons and that is our next area of concern. How to rid writing of the dreaded Run-On.
My intention is to encourage them to add detail and 'colour' to their writing.

computer access for writing and novel time (end of novel projects)

Math 7 completed the worksheet for improper and mixed numbers and introduced the concept of creating the common denominator to be able to compare fractions.

Silent Reading

Personal Planning
'Anger' booklet - we began to look at the differences in verbal communication that is assertive, passive and aggressive (follow up last week's  failed role plays to try to provide the students with some idea of a balanced way to control personal reactions and anger- hopefully, with some verbal and physical body language tools we can effectively re-do the role play activity.

Phys Ed - Bench Ball- game focussing on good ball handling skills- intention of the game is to free your team members from the bench so they can join the floor team and help free even more members. First team to free all members wins.

Art use of the watercolour pencil today sketching small natural items like shells and rocks (pebbles from the beach). The students learned how to smudge the outline and drag the colour across the sketch without wrecking it by using too much water- so far so good- some excellent sketches and trials- tomorrow we will try the lansdcaping idea and hope it is sunny so we can use clipboards outside.

homework review- dismissal
Have a good evening
Mrs. J.
