Well, it looks like everything is the same for my readers but the post page itself is a different format for me- I think I can handle it and I can access it (the Blog) from school :)
Things just look different to me on the browser- isn't it funny how we get used to things being familiar and how we can panic when things change? I'll speak for myself. I was in a panic but it's really not that big a deal. Apprently, I did this to myself (according to my son) because the 'mystery' key I pressed last night was a request to upgrade my browser!!! Who knew? I guess I have to keep up with the times even if it is by accident ! lol
So where was I? Ah ,yes ,Friday! I love Fridays!
I have 10 students left in class this afternoon!! Some students left early for the volleyball tournament (Good Luck to both our boys' and girls' teams), some were absent today and a few others are with their high school buddies!! We are having an 'own choice' afternoon- some are working on novel activites, some art and others a game which is more like an excuse to chat :) I am taking the opportunity to post this Blog while overseeing the activities. It is interesting to watch those who can settle and those who are easdily distracted even with only ten students in class :0
Homework
Math 7 Quiz #4 is set for Monday- please study this weekend by practicing the skills on the worksheets from which the quiz has been created- also see the IXL website for Grade 7
Science Grade 6 and Grade 7
Students who have not yet completed the chapter 1 review activities need to get them finished and the Ch2 work that we did today - I have encouraged students to take home their science texts BUT we had a bit of a crazy afternoon with the early dismissal for the volleyball tournament and I am sure that many have 'forgotten'!! I'll check next week and make a master list of work not handed in FYI.
Reminders
Ask your son or daughter for the article about adolescents and sleep
Movie night tonight at our school.
General Day
daily French
go B.C. Lions go- bring the Grey Cup home
We started our morning by following up yesterday's discussion about sleep and read the students the article (which is really addressed to adults). I have asked the students to take the article home and give it to you FYI so perhaps see if they remembered. It provides some guidelines for bedrooms and what the author calls 'good sleep hygiene'. Apparently a minimum of nine and a quarter hours sleep is recommended for 11-22 year olds!
Science - a big chunk of the morning (9:20-10:20am) was provided for work on science- I had to settle the social interaction on a couple of occasions to get everyone back to the actual science activities.
There are still some Chapter 1 activities from last Friday not handed in yet- if not completed it will be homework with today's Ch 2 activities!! Some were working verrrrrry sllloowwllyy this morning.
I read the students chapters 3 and 4 of Word Nerd. We find out a bit more about how overprotective Ambrose's mother is and why.
Math 7
Reminder about the quiz #4 on Monday and to make the effort to study as the goal is to have fewer redo quizzes!!
Today we also worked on some general problem solving activities (multiple choice) in the TPS- think, pair, share method - these problems require students to recognize the math skills necessary to solve a word problem and apply them to finding an accurate answer.
11:30-12 we used a different set of math skills to play some math based card and dice games while some students provided some buddy assistance for the primary students in music class.
This a win-win :) The students and I love the break and Ms. Sorban appreciates the help- not to mention how positive it is for the primary students to connect with the older students.
Silent reading- good use of the time today for the most part!
Brain Game categories- divergent thinking is good for the left and right sides of the brain because the names and titles bring memories and reminders that are stored in the Hippocampus and it gives them an airing out.
This is a fun way of shaking off the cobwebs of what we know and how we make connections. I was surprised how much fun the studnets had with it- give a letter of the alphabet, say the letter B.
B
The students have to recall and write down: a movie title, a book title, an actor or actress, a song or album (old school!!) title, a game or sport and a food that begins with the letter B.
One example:
Bend it Like Beckham, BFG, Basinger (Kim), Beautiful, Baseball, bananas
2pm volleyball boys' teams left first for Don Ross
2:15 then the girls' teams for HSSS
then the high school mentors arrived
then we were 10
art, games, reading, catching up on work (not a favourite!) and work on the jeopardy boards for novel project. Lots going on just few of us left to do it.
3pm Dismissal after reminding them about the homework!!
Have a great weekend everyone.
