General Day

Thanks Mrs. K.-S. for the computer session (I owe you)
We completed Day 8 for our final day of our virtual trip to see the sights of ancient Greece: the temple bulit to honour Poseidon at Cape Sounion which looks over the Aegean Sea j(ust as Theseus' father once did looking for his son's return from Crete). The students worked diligently on completing their travelogue work that was due by the end of today. Great progress.

Science: Mixtures and Pure Substances
Defining and recognizing heterogenous or homogenous matter.p132/133
Many managed to complete the activity in class :)

DEAR time worked well- allowing for reading, completing activities incomplete and art as long as the 'quiet' time is observed. I need it as much as they do- excitement is growing about our June trip(s).

Quick Personal Planning 'thought for the day' due to some not so positive interaction of peers this morning...
I have asked students to consider their own safety and self-respect both in school and as they move through the big world  that they need to remember
1. not to allow peers (or anyone) to treat them disrespectfully- it is not okay
2. not to 'protect' people who treat others disrespectfully
3. to be mindful of their own safety and responsibilities

Took the opportunity here to discuss the camp details, re-issue the packing lists and sign the personal commitment forms. Good segueway :)

Math - Subracting Fraction: a quick look at the 'borrowing' concept for subtraction of fractions- I didn't really want to do this until next week but we are not back in class until Wednesday and some did the work incorrectly yesterday so I 'pushed the envelope' and managed to explain the idea of 'borrowing' one whole by looking at the denominator and subtracting one (breaking it into how many parts the denomintor needs)
We did three different types today:
First is the most staightforward- same demnoinator and a possible (viable) subtraction.
Second same denominators with an 'impossible' numerator subtraction- need to borrow to make the subtraction possible- we did type two with mixed numbers too.
The third and most 'moves' needed was the mixed number fraction with different denominators and possibly an 'impossible' numerator subtraction. Good start but it is Friday afternoon- retention? After camp? We'll see- more to come...

Computers- the last hurrah- quite a few students are close to or have completed the travelogue assignments and this is the last session for completion for those who are working a little more 'slowly' (for many reasons)
I know that 'work expands to fit the time you have been given' for work to be completed so I NEED to give expected completion dates; however, for students who have their own NEED and are genuinely wanting more time to do a good job and get it finished (there are a couple) an extension is not a problem. Just let me know.

3pm Dismissal
Pray for more sunshine for our days at camp- see everyone Monday ready to go :)
Have great weekend.
Mrs.J.
