Tuesday April 5th

Holy Moely...even if my head could rotate 360 degrees I would still be unable to keep an eye on all of my students!! We did so well yesterday with the main science experiment testing. Today? Well, let's just say after all the safety talks if your child has a sore tummy tonight it may be because they ingested some of the powders we were expeimenting with! Luckily the amounts were miniscule and the materials were inocuous everyday kitchen powers but some, like plaster of paris and baking soda, might leave a student feeling a bit sick!

I need to have a chat with my team 'safety coordiators' tomorrow as it was too crazy to deal with all six teams comprising 30 students this afternoon as it rolled into our gym time. I have decided that after a couple of safety infractions in a team, the whole team will sit out of the next experiment. The students do not know this yet- it is breaking news :)
I will put them on notice tomorrow- one team will be given one more chance to redeem themselves tomorrow and if they can't manage to follow the directions with respect for the materials we are using and their own safety then I think you would join me in taking care of their safety for them.
So, if your child is upset that he or she did not get to participate in a Chemistry activity, ask them first if they had a safety infraction in a previous experiment! Thanks- I need your support.

Today was a praticularly busy day...see below for details

Homework
Still have 11 sentence combining activities to get! Good news is I have 19 already (thanks)
Ch 1-5 activities for the novel- complete
School Newsletter sent home today
Please return your intention to either attend or not Thursday's meeting with the director of the CBC documentary Thursday 7th, at 7pm. I now have 10 of 30 returned !!!

General Day
Started with Novel activity after a bit of oral French regarding the date the weather and the band concert today.
Most students studying Surviving the Applewhites are still working on the Ch 1-5 questions.
Most girls (!) studying Tuck Everlasting have completed the Ch 1-5 activites and are onto the Ch 6-10
work- class time was given for independent work on the novels. Come on boys get up to speed!

Band practice and set up for the concert today- it was very cosy in the gym with our student population, the Carson Graham students and our visitors from HSSS as well as some proud parents.
After recess we had our first ever Gr 7 Band concert and after only three months of band lessons and practice, they did a fabulous job especially on the longer piece called Lamb Chop Rock.
Great effort amd team work- they even all finished at the same time :) Way to go Mrs. Sorben- you have worked hard and deserve the kudos too :)

after our Gr7 band extravaganza, we were entertained by the junior travelling band from Carson Graham school in North Vancouver. We heard their Gr 8-10 stage and jazz bands, wacthed their damcers perform some tap and swing dance routines and listened to their choir sing us a few acappella numbers and a couple with piano accompaniment.

indoor lunch due to rain. Thanks, Saleena, for cleaning the chalk board. I appreciate it :)

During DEAR time I distributed the April Reading records which are mandatory for the months of April, May and June (learning outcome: reads for 30 minutes daily at an independent level novel or non-fiction). I have requested orders (if any) for the April Scholastic TRC (Teen Reading Club) for them to come in before Easter break.
I had it all set up but forgot to do the March Reading draw today- I will do it first thing in the morning. There are only 15 entries for March so the odds are good [but it is also why I have made the completion of the records madatory for the rest of the year- sometimes we get a little 'lazy' on routines]

Science analysis of the mystery powders lab conducted yesterday: our mystery powders were:
A confectioner's sugar B baking powder C plaster of paris D baking soda E corn starch
The students were 3:5 correct on their hypothesis about which powders we were experimenting with yesterday. Today we took a brief consideration of the results data (qualitative) and the team members were asked to feel the texture of the powders today and report on them - then wash their hands (as I mentioned above, a few managed to ingest and others had it all over their desk tops and faces!)
We discussed the iodine reation with any strach turning it into a black substance which was the case for samples B and E. And we considered the fizzing results of sample B with vinegar.
I distributed the experiment questions but 2pm and gym time rolled around before we could complete it and with both our boy's and girl's teams having scheduled floor hockey games tonight I did not think it would be a good idea to forgo the gym time today of all days (can you say 'lynching'?)

Phys Ed: line floor hockey today as the games are after school and ball handling skills are a big part of the team work. I have observed the speed and accuracy skills improving the more we play. I am confident that both teams will do very well in the inter-schools league. I'll let you know results tomorrow. Both teams are playing Brackendale Elementary tonight. We got to play about ten minutes longer than usual which will in part make up for some of the missed PEd sessions before Spring Break (it all works out in the end).

15 minutes left back in class. Clean up. Hand out the newsletter. Remind students about homework and the meeting Thursday. Packed up and got everyone ready for their floor hockey games!! Never a dull moment. Seems like we have many of different things on the go of late- it's getting difficult to keep up with it all!

3pm dismissal
Have a good night- it has stopped raining at least :)
Mrs. J.
