Friday April 8th Sunny Friday :)

What a busy week but we have all made it intact to the weekend which we hear is going to be sunny and warm just in time for the community soccer wind up weekend :)

Thank-you to the parents who managed to attend our meeting last night. It was very worthwhile and it really helps to know you are on board with our projects. Great discussion.

Both the boys' and the girls' floor hockey teams lost their games against Mamquam last night but both games were very close and lots of goals were scored.

Homework
Math booklet is to be completed . 12 students did not finish in class - they know who they are and so do I !! (see yesterday's blog for topic)
Novel the work 5 first chapters is to be completed and turned in for assessement on Monday (April 11th)
On Tuesday 12th we will be attending the matinee theatre performance of The Outsiders at HSSS

General Day
For DPA today, we started training for the 'Beep Run' fitness test and I was actually quite impressed with the team work and the speed of the students. We made better time each team run and we managed to shave a whole 6 seconds off the team times. The students really enjoyed it. My intention was to watch running 'form' and today we did some quick evaluations of different running strides. We completed five different team runs and went from 1minute13secs to 1minute7seconds for team results.
It is still floor hockey season but the weather is improving and Track and Field is just around the corner!

Novel time to recess break. Approx 12 students have work that needs to be completed for the first 5 chapters- please get busy this weekend so we can 'move on' Thanks

Math- I provided assistance and time for all students to complete the math work but some actually requested that they take it home to complete and review- some are struggling even with the concept of the straight line at 180 degrees being cut into 90 degree halves by a perpendicular line. So the angles created by a transversal through parallel lines is too advanced for some right now! We need to remediate that first beofre we can move upward and onward- sometimes it really is just a matter of practice and perception- how to turn the lines to 'see' the BIG PICTURE as oppose to the angles. More work is needed because until this review I had no idea that the students were still struggling with what I consider the more simple concepts!!
What I thought (or assumed) I was teaching is not what they are hearing or learning!! Wow!

Art time for the posters started yesterday Un Spectacle De Musique- the students are drawing a stage band and are learning how to draw different instruments- some are very precise and others 'facsimiles' thereof :)

Science - Bacteria Growing Lab
today the HSSS Gr 11 Biology teacher, Ms. Flynn, brought 6 (welcome back to grade seven Erin- a former student :)) of her senior students and they guest taught a Lab in which we will be testing for the efficiency of plain old soap and water, hand wipes and hand santitizer in the cleaning of our hands. The students were all provided with their own agar plate and tested B for Before and A for After. The Scientific Process of hypothesis (If...then...) and controls (variables, independent and dependednt) were filled out on the worksheet.
Some interesting discussion- one of the students wondered if a bar of soap might 'harbour' germs in it but we had not planned to have a used bar of saop to test unfortunately so that is an interesting extension perhaps for another time which is what science is all about - right? So cool :)
The high school students are going to incubate the specimens for a week and then return to do data and analysis next Friday. Should be interesting. The majority of student are 100% confident that the hand sanitizer will 'win' the 'bake off'...we'll see just because it is marketed to kill 99% of bacteria doesn't mean it actually will. It will be neat to find out.

Computers- Panyee FC. I showed the students a very inspirational video (You Tube) about a soccer teams 'trials' in southern Thailand and how the young people there persevered and now have a very vibrant and successful soccer team and program despite the challenges of their space and circumstances. They enjoyed it.
Then they MADE me listen to a Rebecca Black song called Friday (on You Tube) great beat but I don't recommend it for lyrics or singing quality! Oh well- they thought it was funny- it being Friday and all!!

We finished the day with some free time and a couple of former students visited from DRSS to tell me tales out of school. It was nice to see them.

3pm dismissal
Good luck with all the soccer games this weekend.

Have a great weekend. See everyone on Monday :)
Mrs. J.
