Tuesday March 8th

I managed to get the rest of the Term 2 reports done last night after an attack of the munchies!! I love Mars bars (perhaps it is from my childhood days when I believed that the chocolate helped me "work, rest and play"- did you get those adverts over here?) Anyway, I am overall VERY proud of the students' achievement. The Term 2 progress reports will prove that we have been working hard if you had any doubt. They will be sent home on Monday of next week.

The students received PAC fundraising catalogues from Purdy's chocolates for Easter (which still is a long way off) they ask that orders are returned by March 18th before Spring Break.

No Homework.
March 11 Grad hoodie order and payment.Thank-you to those who have already returned the information and payment :)

General Day
International Women's Day- I used this topic of current affairs to brainstorm and discuss issues that affect women around the world and the students came up with a surprinsing list that included infanticde, freedom to marry, health- especially pregnancy and abortion, sexual slavery and confinement, wage parity, employment opportunities, childcare issues and basic rights and freedoms in daily life. I am trying to encourage students to write their speeches for the upcoming Public Speaking forum that will be held in early April. I have ten interested so far which is exciting.
We will be discussing a current affair topic every morning to provide some possible ideas for the speeches.

French- did a quick run through of the Catholic religious history behind Mardi Gras (that's today) 'Fat Tuesday' and many of the students were unaware that it was the beginning of the Lenten period of time that leads up to Easter. Many countries around the world celebrate the day before the 'fast' and many are also French speaking (or other Romantic languages).
We also started a graphic booklet  called J'ai Faim (comic strip style) to practice avoir and to put together all the words and phrases we have been learning into cohesive sentence and dialogue.

Band

Math review subraction of integers with a puzzle sheet and after a reminder of procedure for changing the sunbract sign to an addition . I.E  -3-(-5)= -3+(+5)= 2

DEAR time was good today. I did the draw (for completed reading progress sheets) and the winner for March was Saleena. She will receive a free choice form the Scholastic catalogue. Congratulations.

I introduced a Fine Arts project after reading. The students have had the opportunity to choose their own groups- not less than three not more than five. We will be doing a New Video Game project.
The students will have to brainstorm ideas and come up with a new video game concept (not one that has already been done and no GTA or copying Halo or Call of Duty- I suggested no shoot 'em ups that kill people or animals so I'll have to see if this is able to be done!!)
The students will 'market' their idea, create a poster AND present a commercial to 'sell' their product in our student 'market'. For the last couple of years I have done this with chocolate bars but I am looking for something new and you never know maybe Donald Trump will like the ideas enough to buy them!!!

Phys. Ed. 5 on 5 basketball continued. and tomorrow we'll trying a mini tournament. We drew teams at random. We'll see how it works- most of the teams are pretty fair- maybe one is a bit 'stacked' but I tried to split them up as best I could.

Back in class we packed up for the day and did a bit more thinking about the video game project.
3pm dismissal.
Have a great evening. I have a play off game to night at the curling club- wish me luck :)
