Tuesday February 22nd

Tuesday- luckily the 5cm of snow was more like 5mm :)
Hope it doesn't snow when I am curling at the club tonight!!

Tuesday and we are still vibrating BUT we were a little more productive today :)
I put a new seating plan into place with the help /input of the students and although their is no ideal, I am happy to experiment with 4 groups of 4, 1 group of 5 and the rest in pairs. It is different and today was day 1 of the combinations so I'll see how things settle this week. 29 pre-adolescents are like nailing jello to the wall.

Actually I heard a story this morning on CBC about an 11 year old (think it was Prince George but don't quote me on that!) apparently he wouldn't get out of the swimming pool and despite the pool guard's 2 hours of persuasion the 11 year old would not get out of the pool. When the kid became a danger to himself and others, they called the police. The kicker is that the police negotiation didn't work either so a poor police officer had the job of getting into the pool to retrieve said 11 year old!!!!OMG can you imagine?
Makes the odd temper tantrum sound like a dream!!

Homework
Unit 19 spelling and activity (also previous activities that are still to be handed in!!) names are on the board for those not too sure if they owe me an activity!!
Science overdue booklets (Chapter 7)
Brain Work- be prepared to discuss how (of even if it is possible to) approximate the litres of ocean water in our world!!! Myth Busters? Google it maybe....discussion tomorrow (this came out of today's analysis of the world area km2 that the 5 major oceans take up (70%) of the world!!

General Day
Started with some Housekeeping items that took a while to cover
  1. The seating plan- new today
  2. The Term 2 report card template was shared with students (one between two)
  3. The colour of hoodie and print that the students would like to order for 'Grad' this year
  4. The purpose of BUSTED points is to correct my math errors- points will add up to an agreed on 'reward'. During math, to keep the students paying attention, the students can BUST me by providing the correct answer or formula or whatever when I make an error or forget a crucial measurement etc. They are only for math though  because seriously they could be BUSTING me all day!! I don't make all errors accidentally on purpose!!
  5. Issues with Phys. Ed classes- brief class discussion about general behaviour and safety!!This after yeaterdays fiasco!
French- daily phrase translation- review briefly Etre and distribute Avoir - to have- irregular verb. Went through the parts in its declension and the worksheet new vocabulary. Follow up Wednesday.

Band class

Science: Location of the continental plates- 'Labtivity' (hands on lab activity) that had the students piece back together the world map jigsaw style so they could identify the continental plates and locate the origin of many of the world's volcano and earthquake zones whare the 'action' of the earth's crust movement is taking place. We discussed briefly the earthquake in New Zealand yesterday. I was surprised how many students had difficulty with the fine motor skill of cutting the map!! This activity will need more time (we had approximately 50 minutes today)

DEAR time was better today :) Knew it would be...
Some were working on Science, some on SRA lab cards, others were reading and a few brave souls asked if they could clean up their desk and clean their binders up!!! Productive :)

Oceans of the World Map #2- we did this one together as our 22 year old atlas is a 22 year old atlas!!! Say no more. Thank goodeness for the Internet. We googled it and shared the information- did you know that the oceans of the world extend 335,400,000km2???
I also had much trouble trying to spell Antartica see I think I did it again Antarctica! Sheesh- I gave the students a BUSTED point for that!!

Phys Ed. after a brief class meeting about behaviour and general conduct. We played a rousing and very fast game of line basketball 3 on 3. It was okay- the skills were great but the constant whigning is so distracting- the amount of time lost to call outs and students trying to miscall my number rotation is adding up. I have decided to give the whole class push ups for every interruption. We may as well do a half hour of push ups some days!!!LOL

Back in class we had a final class vote on the hoodie colour and print the student want for this years 'grad' hoodie BUT big change as a student came up with a different combo that was popular SO more tomorrow when hopefully everyone will be here!! Another 2 away today.

3PM dismissal
I have headache!!
Gotta get to the culring club tonight for the season's last league game- pass the Advil first!
Have a good night.
Mrs. J.
