TGIF - this week was duty week for me and today was the first day that we saw any precipitation- it is trying hard to snow but I think the rain will win out the weather battle.
Talking of battles...
We briefly covered the latest events from Egypt today as part of looking at current events.
Congratulations to the people of Egypt. It is such an inspirational, not to mention historical, event. My hats off to those brave and stalwart people who stood up for their basic human rights by defying the government and won an epic battle over the President and his regime. Bye, Bye Mubarak. Democracy is not always pretty or easy and many died for the cause all the same my heart soars with the Egyptians to hear of the people power that had a President step down at last. Thank-you for showing us what is possible.
Homework

Word Nerd Ch 30 Last chapter today- The students weren't too happy with the novel's conclusion- Ambrose turns 13 and finds that Amanda, Cosmo, the E's and his mom (Irene) and Mr. Acheson (Bob) throw him a surprise party. He finds out that he will be taking part in Scrabble tournament in Alberta with Cosmo and Amanda. His mom will be driving him in a rental car and he will get the chance to visit his Nana and see his dad's burial place. His mom understands Ambrose is happy in Vancouver and promises they won't be packing up to leave to go anywhere. The End.
We discussed the elements of the story that they enjoyed and those that they would like to change and the ending was one of them. Oh well, I know the students enjoyed the read and we voted and actually started Chapter 1 of Susin Neilsen's next novel just recently published called, Dear George Clooney, Please Marry my Mother.
Math - algebra practice on taking English story problems written out and changing the story info. into mathematical equation and then solving it. Did two BIG story problems that needed to use three variable and in which the soultions were multi-step.
Here is an example:
If Fred's father is 25 years older than Fred and Fred's mother is 23 years older than Fred and all three of their current ages add up to 93, what age is Fred and what ages are his father and mother respectively?
Science Ch 8.2 reading and discussing the implications of the scientific knowledge of the Theory of Continental Drift. There are quite a few specialized vocabulary words that we needed to introduce before we can do a Pangea activity.
DEAR time
I took about 10-15 minutes after reading today to introduce and encourage more reading of novels in the class time (and/or at home) I have some recent acquisitions and wanted to let the students know what was available. There are some amazing reads in our class library and I have been encouraged by how consistently the students are using the TRC suggestions. We have added a number of Holocaust fiction and nonfiction reads, Safe as Houses and Branded (Eric Walters), The Juvie Three by Gordon Korman and Bar Code Tattoo by Suzanne Weyn.
Art time while we watched a movie. It was nice to hear the students laugh at the silly comedy as they coloured and created some really amazing landscape pieces. Thanks to the students who helped with the display of our ancient Egyptian profiles. You did a great job.
Dismissal 3pm
