Rabbie Burns was a farmer poet of some of the most romantic and observant poetry of Scotland in the 18th century- he wrote poems that are still well known today (i.e. My love is like a red, red, rose and For Auld Lang Syne which is still a New Year favourite- at least it is in Scotland!). His observations of his world were unique in that he wrote poems to the smallest of creatures like the mouse whose nest he uprooted in his field while planting or even the louse that he spied on the head of the woman in the pew in front of him at church. My favourite has to be Tam O' Shanter the narrative poem of the husband who comes home having spent too long in the bar and the epic 'short cut' journey home he and his horse take through the kirk (church) - you wouldn't believe the crazy things that 'chase' him but his wife ain't buying it!! I'll never forget my crazy high school English teacher, Sister Mary Benedicta, acting it out in her nun's habit and her navy blue suit -so hilarious -and I never forgot the poem.
We Scots commemorate our poet-farmer with a haggis dinner and toast (cheers). We usually recite the poem he wrote for the haggis (it is food not a wee furry creature that runs around the hills)
I probably won't celebrate with haggis dinner until the weekend- there's no place to buy a haggis in Squamish now- I'll keep a bit leftover so the students can try it next week- if they dare that is :) lol
Homework is minimal
Projects thee to go now :) Quin, Tracy and Trixton

General Day
Discussed the observation of some writer's to the world around them through an introduction (like the one above) to Robert Burns. Some writer's can connect to the world and write/think from the perspective of the most obscure things- we discussed and made examples of personification and generally considered how to go about answering questions about writer's perspective. It is not as easy as it seems because you have to think about what the writer meant using the perspective of the selection as well as make a connection to your own understanding.
Chapter 13 Word Nerd (didn't get it completed so will do it and Ch 14 tomorrow)
Band class next
Math- problem solving using patterns- some practice changing words of a problem to an expression or equation that can be solved. An algebraic expression needs numerical coefficients, a variable or variables, computation signs and a solution marked off by an equals sign. We definitely need more work on turning problems into expressions that can be solved- more on that tomorrow.
Family Groups- today we did our group logo together- we were very productive and I had lots of great ideas and help from my students. Thanks everyone :)
DEAR time was okay - still some challenged to read or concentrate on a book for more than five minutes!!!
I actually went back to do a bit of correcting of the morning math examples as we ran out of time this morning. We went over the 'how to' together- the intention being that even if it was incorrect, students would know for the next example how to go about getting a correct solution.
Phys Ed. continued the lay-up skills game (going head-head ) using student numbers- some of the individual match ups were not quite a fair as they could have been but everybody seemed to enjoy the friendly competition. I started to call 2 numbers at a time which meant 4 (2 versus 2) were on court assisted by their team members. The students added some really good rules about passing first before making a basket and playing fairly by all starting at the same distance from the ball. I liked how they modified the game to improve the experience. Good session.
Art -Landscapes - an introduction to our next project- we ran out of time today but there were lots of good ideas and we will get it started this week as it is at least a two or three week project and I would like to use the results for the school's art show.
3pm Dismissal
