Tuesday Jan. 28th

Some days I get to the end of the day and I completely forget what I need to get done to prepare for the next day!! I might get a bit of help if I do the Blog as I am forced to reflect on the day. Maybe I'll be able to see more clearly my plan for Wednesday!!

Friday is PJ day and at 1pm, our annual Spelling Bee will take place in the gym
FSA tests will begin next week- a schedule will be drawn up for the testing sessions which need to be completed by Feb. 25th

General Day
Chapter 8 Word Nerd in which we learn that Ambrose will be completing his grade seven school year by correspondence from home and his mom will take a sessional lecturer position at UBC so she can be home during the day
French: Quelle heure est-il? More work on using the patterns to tell time in French
BAND class
Math- a correction session for of the last few worksheets on adding and subtracting integers- I unfortunately confused the students by misreading the table for the second activity!! The good news is that it didn't take long for the students to make me realize that I WAS WRONG- sorry about that- but I used it (despite my embarrassment) to show how easily errors can be made when I don't read carefully- I know this might sound strange as I am the teacher BUT sometimes my nose is too close to the board for me to have a BIG PICTURE look or perspective of a lesson so I am grateful to the observant students who made me stop and look and correct. Thank-you- it takes confidence and I am proud of you (although I'm still rather embarrassed!!)
Family Groups story, Have you filled your bucket today? The students learned what it means to be a bucket filler instead of a bucket dipper. The invisible buckets we all carry (self esteem, confidence, joy) get filled by the decent, kind and thoughtful ways we interact with others. The more you fill the buckets of others the more your bucket fills and the more likely you are to have enough in your life to fill the buckets of those who have empty buckets. It is like the 'pay it forward' idea. The student seemed to enjoy having the chance to tell me how I could become a better teacher and not being a bucket dipper!! :)

DEAR time was pretty good today- I must admit though that I was the interruption today during that time as I allowed a few students who really needed to get themselves organized to use the time!!

BTW-I have spent approx. an hour today getting students organized. Being organized is one of those skills that can make or break a high school course. I want my students to learn the art of keeping an organized binder this year so the learning curve won't be quite as daunting next year!!

Personal Planning- we continued with the 'making decsions and assessing risk' activity we started yesterday- one of the students counted 10 interruptions (mostly silly comments and inability to listen to peer's answers) I need to consider how to turn this into a more positive experience for all students and it might mean having to send a few out. That's not my first line of defense though...the ironic thing is that the students who most need the instruction that comes with these activities are the students who are unable to handle the lessons!! Some may be feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed but others are just interrupting to get a laugh or entertain each other.  The majority of students are expressing their annoyance so...I'll keep you posted.

Phys. Ed. continuation of basketball scrimmage skills- I am going to have to back up the bus with the play as I have an interesting difference between the boys and girls play patterns. Boys are running the game way too fast for a thoughful game to be played and there are many fouls and a great deal of travelling with the ball. Passes are wild and and wasted. The girls seem to be afraid of the ball- they don't move to pick it up they stand still and want it to come to them so they are easily losing possession. Bounce and dribble moves are too high and uncontrolled so they are losing possession of the ball due to the ease of being able to pick the ball away in mid-movement. Everyone had a chance to play - lots of voices- if the students had a little bit less to say they might be able to listen to some coaching instruction.
Tomorrow the girls will have a private girls-only yoga session with Ms. Kislasko and the boys will be in the gym for a boys only basketball session in which I will attempt to get them working on SLOWING the game down.

No time for Art session but I did go over our choice for the Art show that we are going to feature soon. Landscapes or Rotational art pieces- I had time to show sample of the rotation and tomorrow I will provide samples of the landscape painting.
Homework discussed- especially the project work not in yet.
3pm dismissal
Have a nice evening.
Mrs. J.
