Friday January 28th TGIF

Another Friday in the aftermath of a week of grade seven classes - another seating plan!! I am not too sure if this one will work as I gave a choice to half of the students at random (popsicle sticks) and allowed them to chose a partner (the other half will get a chance to chose next time). Now I am arranging the desks into small groups- I find there is just not enough wriggle space when I set out 15 pairs of desks. Some of the partner choices are not exactly the best personality combinations BUT never say never is our class motto this year so I have to trust first and manage later!!!

Busy day which once again disappeared like hot bread on a cold day!!

Homework
the only thing I didn't get to today was the MATH practice worksheet on the algebra steps so if the students didn't get to it last night, they will have the weekend to practice and get it done for Monday
UBC letters and payment- have about 10 outstanding
Tracy, Quin and Trixton hand in what you have done for socials please!! Something is better than nothing!

General Day
DPA great session in the gym fast and skilled and approx. 22 baskets were scored in a close competitive game of 'rushing basketball' - teams were very even and final score was 11-10. Great job and everyone participated well. Some great baskets scored too as well as good defensive play.

Persuasive argument
I wanted to get the students thinking about topics which they might have strong opinions about so I started with UNIFORMS telling them (it isn't true!!!) that the district was phasing in uniforms for all schools in subsequent school years. WOW ...If they tell you that is what they heard today at school, please understand it was a discussion activity that I hope they understood was just to get their opinions for and against but even at lunch time a couple of students wanted to be reassured that it wasn't happening for real!!! It's NOT. But, boy, did I get some opinions. Great stuff (really got them going) but the discussion idea nearly backfired on me BIG time.
Once that discussion dwindled, we brainstromed topics for our persuasive writing activity on Monday and there were many including but not limited to: video games, technology, health care, music videos, global warming, 2012, brands, reality TV (an oxymoron), children's rights and medical marijauna. Whew... I have my work cut out for me as do they.

Word Nerd completed chpters 15 and 16 of our novel. Cosmo has lied to Amanda to get a date telling her he is Ambrose's 'Big Brother' and because he needs to take Ambrose along with them he promises he'll teach Ambrose self-defense in return for the favour. Ambrose's mom is making it easier because she is meeting most evenings after work with Jane for a drink. Jane apparently is a friend from work.

French Quiz- Quelle heure est-il? Unit end- show what you know.

Science- I do need to schedule more time for science OR start to send it home for completion next week as I have a class who is all over the map on the unit work. Chapter 7 from Earth's Crust section on the formation of rocks.

Hot Lunch today

DEAR time (some students were catching up on missed assignments) most read as expected- there is very seldom 100% participation which can be disappointing. Some stuudets have not read properly for the longest time because they are 'picture pointing'. I will keep up the pressure to read fiction, non-fiction, graphic novel and the articles that go with the pictures.

Personal Planning Risk Assessment activity before the students forget the attempt at discussion, I gave out the independent assignment today that has the students chose four issues/scenarios and place one in each risk category preoviding a defense for their choice. I look forward to reading them this weekend.

We discussed an alternative seating plan and set about getting the choices completed for half of the class so I could arrange the desks after school. Will try anything once.

Computers- went into our time by a bit in getting things packed up for the week but once at computers, we checked out the website for Evans Lake. At the meeting last night, the camp the director offered us a day and one night at the camp this June and the students seemed to be much more interested in doing a one night two day program in early June. More later as AI get these dates booked for sure.
10 minutes free time finished the week.
3pm dismissal
Have a good weekend, folks. See evryone on Monday for a new adventure in class seating.
Mrs J.
