Friday January 14th, 2011

The week in retrospect was a rather challenging one made more diffcult by the continual poor behaviour and bad choices made by a handful of students in our class.
The socials project is now in their hands as I can provide no more time or assistance with the process and I have to tell you I am looking forward to seeing the end of it except for the assessment.
That is this weekend's homework

A hot lunch form was sent home today from the PAC. It is due back Jan 20th (next Wednesday)

General Day
DPA started the day- dodge basketball - students seemed to enjoy it - energetic way to start the day

Science - acitivity for the rocks lab last week- some students are still getting themselves upo to speed with the work that they missed last week before the Christmas break and first week back. Review of Ch1 and the crossword still needs to be completed by a handful of students and Ch7 booklet What's inside the Earth needs to be completed before the rocks and minerals assignment.
The majority of students are at Ch 7 Earth's Crust and we have been analysing the formation and process of  rocks and minerals. Everyone present did the lab last Friday.

Half hour for computers - socials project time as promised. Most but not all used it wisely!!

Math- today we played an integer card game in partners and practiced the skills of addition of integers using the cards (red positive and black negative)- it was a noisy session but I heard lots of good math practice going on - only a couple of partners got frustrated enough to 'give up' so in future I will plan on a change of partners becuse some students are much faster at mental arithmetic than others so once you have lost a game by a wide margin, confidence might need to be lifted with another card partner that you might possibly beat depending on your

DEAR time - after an indoor lunch always takes longer to settle!!

Chapters 4 and 5 of our novel Word Nerd in which the lies that the protagonist, Ambrose, told his mom about having friends are exposed at a meeting with the bullies and the principal. Ambrose's mom is embarrassed and angry at him and has walked out of the principal's office without him!

Art- either the Egyptian profiles or the illustrations for the project. The students seem to be particularly needy this afternoon and some cannot focus on any activity- lots of noise and social interaction!!

Pack up go over the expectations about the project for weekend homework (see above)
End of day session and last chance at computer lab. 2:25- 2:30pm
That's all folks.
What I found frustrating is that despite my best intentions, a number of students spent more time at the lab not doing the work they were expected to do and when I redirected them and moved away they simply returned to what they wanted to do. These will be the same students who claim not to have been given enough time. Don't believe it!! No whining, no exceptions hand it in Monday and peace be with you.
I am SO looking forward to the end of the class time for this work. Amen.

3pm dismissal - yeah- have a good weekend
Mrs. J.
