So, guess what....? It happened today....the first snowflake and I mean a miniscule snowflake and I had at least six or seven students at the window trying to spot it :):):)
Told you it would happen!!
Homework
[Except for students who missed a couple of days this week] there is no new homework this weekend
AND, if I say so myself, the students deserve it as they worked hard this week. Great job everyone.
I have sent work home for students who were away.
General Day's activities
Collections (hot lunch, Band, Bazzar, Scholastic and popcorn sales) Thanks everyone- great 80's outfits girls- we'll have to do it again sometime (sorry I completely forgot- too much on my mind)
I tried teaching the students a classic Canadian Barn Dance without music just so we could get the steps- they did an amazing job. I am planning to try to include a dance number in the Christmas concert but I am not sure with the time we have how many students will feel comfortable dancing- enough I'll bet to make it a worthwhile venture. I'll keep you posted! Were going to try.
Vote for our Christmas song for the concert. There were 8 choices - a couple of them had already been chosen by other classes. My family and I have a fav. Christmas number that we all get up and dance to called "Christmas in Killarney" - the students voted twice for a top three and then again (once) for a top choice and with 17 votes our song is "Christmas in Killarney". I am pumped; it's going to rock!
Science- Ch 1 review on the main ideas that we presented in our posters last Friday on symbiosis and bio accumulation. We did the multiple choice independently, switched papers and marked them right away- scores ranged from 3-10 of 11 questions- so we have a bit more reading/learning (memorizing to do in this area) I told the students not to worry as I do not use 'practice' marks for assessment. Next the students used the text to complete a cloze review of all the main ideas of Ch 1 Ecosystems, Some managed to get started on the accompanying crossword- we'll follow this up next week.
Today I just observed our DEAR reading time. It was used for miscellaneous activities which I decided to 'let go' instead of shut down. I do want it to be used for reading; however, I didn't have the heart (or energy) today to stop the following activites: one student was helping another to figure out the math graph that she was struggling with, a few worked reading their science text to finish the review and crossword, one knitted quietly under her desk!!, another asked me for a reading passage to practice for the MC audition on Monday and the rest pretty much read their choice of novels or non-fiction books. Interesting- everyone was engaged doing something so I just had to let the 'control' go- what's not to like about a half hour of quiet industry?
I intended to do a clear out of Term 1 work (organizational time) but realized the students were getting a bit tired and chatty (maybe a clue was the ruler swashbuckling going on at the back of the class- don't ask) SO instead I decided to give out a map of Japan and Korea just to see who knew what about that part of the world. It is amazing the general knowledge that abounds when you just spring things on this group. I had forgotten that I had these maps and just came across them when I was looking for something else. Love that!
Today we learned that the water bodies between Japan and Korea are the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea (between Korea and China) - they are located in the Pacific. The capital city of Communist North Korea is Pyongyang, the capital of South Korea is Seoul and the capital of Japan is Tokyo. A little futher north by way of the Bering Sea we are back to Russia and North America.
Hey, not bad for a Friday afternoon - off the top of our heads activity :) They did a great job.
Computers- we finished up our word processing and I think I have most of the alternative endings for the novel. The students were rewarded with some free time - I showed a short clip from YouTube called Lost Generation but I couldn't get the sound to work. Still I was able to share it with them and one student was inspired to get the 'script' for it so she could use it for her audition on Monday. That made my week.
The students have generally done a fabulous job of the novel endings- I haven't had time yet to read them all or properly but I have been impressed with their effort and presentation on computer. Many thanks to Mrs. Peace for her patience and assistance with our techniques.
Pack Up and dismissal 3pm
We had a great week, busy, industrious and interesting- it went by quickly.
Have a great weekend everyone- rest up. Mrs. J.
