Before I forget!!! November 4th

I love my mornings. The students are so productive; however,  there is a distinctive change in their stamina (and mine perhaps?) come lunch time. I certainly find the afternoons are a little more difficult to manage! Just an observation but I have a feeling that this is going to be my next area of inquiry- what will work in the afternoon? I almost feel that perhaps I have too much going on but this group is high energy and right now I believe that I need to keep them moving and doing.

Tonight's homework
Math : I asked the students to complete to the best of their ability a review math assignment on multiples, factors and prime numbers- it is actually a look back at (a tweak) of the a grade 6 learning outcome for math.
I should remind parents that not all of the resources I use will be in the text book. Do not worry if YOU can't understand the math- it is your son or daughter that needs to try it out.
other than the math- there is nothing new however, I think some of you would be shocked at how many students are not handing in the assignments that are now overdue.
I have done everything I can to ensure they know what to do and are aware it is overdue but I can't make them care!
Reminder that as of tomorrow the students have 4 school days to hand in term 1 work if they want it to be assessed for their report card.
A school newsletter went home today with the majority of students- some left their copy behind

General Day
Spelling Unit 7 and redo Unit 6

Picture Story Memorial which tied in very well to our novel and socials concepts. The main idea was about the importance of memories and how something as simple as a tree can have a lasting inpact on the things people want to remember and would rather not remember- it recounts the young men in a small town who served in the wars in which Canada took part.
[By the way this was the story that I tried to share yesterday and as you can probably tell from my 'afternoon rant' above the afternoon was definitely the wrong time to try to read my students a story!!]

Music- exciting proposal by Ms. Sorban our music teacher that she would like to offer and encourage the interest in Band classes at Squamish Elementary. The issue of subsidy has been considered by our PAC and Ms. Sorban is encouraged by the students who have shown interest. She has asked that the intermediate teachers let students and parents know that it is a definite possibility with her experience and access to the high school supplies. I managed to have the chance to read her proposal after school today to find out more about it- perhaps once we (she has) have numbers we can send out more information. Why not ask you son or daughter if they are commited to learning to play an instrument this school year and Ms. Sorban can go ahead with her Band plans. :)

Math Today we reviewed a learning outcome from last year ensuring that students remember their numbers which are composite, prime and factors. Today we shared different ways (methods) - thanks, Tony- of finding the GCF Greatest commom Factor and the LCM Lowest common Multiple. The booklet is to be completed for homework only 4 (maybe) 5 finished it in class today becsue they used their reading time .... Naughty.... Naughty (I need to keep an eye peeled for that in future.)

I returned the socials trests today and we did a self assessment on what they thought they achieved and what they actually achieved. The results were generally good although the range of marks was from 17%- 92%
( 2 A's, 6 B's, 4 C+'s, 6 C's, 2 C- and 5 below 50% with two students still to write.)
We went over the questions and answers ans most students agreed that better studying might lead to personal improvement for the next time. Go figure!

DEAR time - apparently some students were doing their homework!!!!! Thanks to the readers who worked with Mrs. Parker's grade fives.

Socials  we needed to complete the Ch 2 reading- and we did- just! YEAH... I would have to say that the students seem to have enjoyed the study of the science behind archaeology and anthropology. Did you know that artifacts and evidence found in Tanzania proved to be the footprints of upright walking 'humamoids' which dated back 4 million years!! One of the students made us laugh when he told us that he thinks he might have some artifacts under his bed!! I didn't ask for details.

ART
The students needed to make the time to complete their already started projects which are part of term one fine arts assessment. I found the noise level and general atmosphere during art was too social and 'silly'. A number of students needed personal reminders about their tasks. We will need to re-visit our behaviour during art and come up with a better plan. They really are still going on sugar from Halloween candy - it's better but I keep finding well hidden evidence in our classroom. Hopefully they will eat it all this weekend and we'll be fuelled by normal sugar levels next week.

Dismissal 3pm
Pictures went out to students who bought packages
