Tuesday Oct 26th Teriffic Tuesday!

Some days just never end. I can't believe it is nearly 5pm already. I spent some time after school getting a student organized luckily her ride home was delayed so we could really get everything in ship shape!! I have kept up my practice of surprise checks on messy desks three were targetted this evening- the students in question will start tomorrow morning in 'fix-it" mode. (Evil laugh!)
Amazing how many candy wrappers I am finding stashed away in nooks and crannies!!

The boy's volleyball team (10 in our class) headed up to play Pemberton this afternoon. I hope they had a great game because they were so pumped today that they were vibrating with anticipation.

Tonight's Homework
I forgot to do the Unit 4 spell test redo so tomorrow the redo for tests 4 and 5 will take place in the morning (before I forget again)
Test 6 on Friday this week
disappointing turn out again for homework- I don't know what to say- hopefully we can have a really good chat about it tomorrow evening with the parents who can come to the planned evening!!
ALL the same old assignments (it seems providing students with the template for Term 1 didn't have the desired effect!!) Let's see: math work on divisibility (and exponents), novel work ch 6-10 and 11-15!!, Science booklet on interactions of organisms, and completion of the in-class assignments that are incomplete!!
Reminder
tomorrow evening from 5-6pm I will be hosting a parent evening to discuss my assessment, homework procedures and learning with the web (internet). There will be a hands on session in our computer lab.

General Day
we really are working productively in the mornings :)

Today we started with a general 'hot topics in the news' discussion but the students were not all up with my news stories (the weather 'bomb' a storm system that has had a devastating effect already on the Chicago area and is putting surrounding areas on high alert as the worst storm for 100 years !!!!; the outbreak of cholera in Haiti and the efforts of the Canadian organization called Medicins sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders); the changes in cabinet- who cares?[I thought it was funny when one of the students wanted to know whose bathroom cabinet was getting changed] and finally special, special news for a special BIG BROTHER weighing in at 8lb 13 ozs arriving into the world today a baby boy a little brother for JJ- way to go mom. Congratulations and may all your problems be little ones (lol). I had my own sob story about my poor sick doggy who made a mess at 3am right in my bedroom. Don't ask it's been a long day and I still have to curl tonight!!! Wahhh!
From this we did a 'free write' journal entry about whatever was on their minds. The entries were very diverse and interesting: volleyball, babies, bullying, weather, moves from other provinces, halloween etc.
Next was music.
For math we worked quite dilligently on BEDMAS - order of operations. It is so strange that some students do not want to follow rules- I have never experienced that before- what to do when students decide that they don't have to (or want to) follow the rules that ahve been the math rules forever!!! Oh my...what is that about?
DEAR time was fabulous and I was very proud of the students (most of them) managed to continue independent reading when I had to visit the office for a few minutes- way to go grade seven :)
For Personal Planning we reviewed our progress so far on what's working with us as a class and what we need to improve. I would have to say the students recognize the issues and I think we are willing to go head to head with them as a TEAM (together everyone achieves more).
Then the boy's had to leave for a volleyball game- they shared a bus with Mamquam and travelled up to Whistler. I just found out from Mr. Parker that they won- way to go boys (all three games).
With 17 students left we had a smaller (not necessarily quieter) afternoon and it was nice to have space in the gym and for art back in the class. The end of the day snuck up on us and it was a bit of a mad scramble for homework.
3pm dismissal
Time to get to the curling club. Have a dry evening.
Mrs. J.
