Thourougly Thoughtful Thursday Oct 28th

Today we were guinea pigs for the DARE officers from around the province and I was very proud of the students who generally managed to hold it together to give both officers and both DARE lessons the best of their attention. The rest of the day proved a bit more difficult to keep them engaged but we managed to get to 3pm without falling out!!

Tonight's homework
Spell test #6 tomorrow
French Haunted house tomorrow
any overdue assignments for assessment asap
Students are encouraged to dress up tomorrow for our 1st spirit day (pun intended) :) Prizes for the class with the most participation :)
Thank-you to the parents who took the time to attend the parent evening last night. I hope it was informative and worthwhile for you. Now that I know which parents to send them to, I will be sending the information shared at the two parent nights home with respective students.

General Day
DARE lesson #1 on alcohol and commercial advertising for alcohol products Constable Fox from Richmond detachment
Music Imagine lyrics and choir practice
DARE lesson #2 on peer pressure and friendship (with a timely reminder about being smart and having fun by making good decisions this Halloween) Constable Brett from Logan Lake
Partner activity The Monster Cafe a challenge to see which team could come up with the grossest menu for monsters- fun activity that was very creative ('poo-tine' for example) sorry! but the students still managed to eat their lunches right after their horrific menus.

DEAR time was much needed to calm down the growing excitement for both Halloween this weekend and the girl's volleyball game tonight (Mamquam). The students who read for the grade 5's did their duty and the remaining students had a very focussed reading time.
Socials We did an activity to try to help the students understand the importance of hypothesis and scientific speculation on archaeological artifacts. The students got a bit too noisy and excited about the chance to break a vase (safety was ensured) every student got at least one whack at it and I wanted them to imagine that each whack was 500 years of history!!
We created several smaller pieces of the vase as an 'artifact' that might be found in the 'field' grid of an archaeological dig.We followed the activity up with the Chapter 2 related reading about 'the puzzling pieces' that artifacts often present themselves as and discussed the process of speculation and scientific testing that is part of the decision making process about the significance of the pieces of artifact that are found.

Just as we were planning our 'pot luck' afternoon the fire alarm (we did have warning) sounded and we headed out trying a new door as our exit- the students were a bit too loud and silly for such an important drill. We need to work on being better role models for the younger students.
Art- Halloween houses ended our day- the houses are due tomorrow complete with the French labelling of the Halloween motifs and the house parts.
We agreed that we would like to have a bit of a celebration tomorrow afternoon and watch a movie (I will bring a few classroom appropriate titles for a vote) and share some goodies in pot luck style.
Dismissal bell at 3pm as the girl's were getting organized for their game at Mamquam. Good luck to them- I know they were pumped and hope they met their goal- I'll let you know tomorrow.
See everyone Friday.
Remember to bring an addition to our pot luck- we have cookies, popcorn and Ashleigh's mom always sends us something yummy.
Mrs. J.
