Wednesday, September 15th

Hi Folks,
Sorry there was no Blog last night- I had some very important family obligations to take care of after school yesterday. Just so you know, on Wednesdays, the Blog will be created after my fitness class.

Homework tonight
Complete Term 1 goal sheet (bring back signed in the homework Folder)
SCHOOL SUPPLIES are needed ASAP- especially binders and dividers
Terry Fox donation
Hot Lunch forms and payment due tomorrow
complete French title page if not yet finished (most are done)

We are still moving along slowly but surely with the organization and routines as expected this week. I have done a great deal of explaining (talking and repeating) but the good news is that we are getting closer to being ready for the year's curricular work.
As of today it is two months to the Term one report card. Tonight I have asked that all students take a minute or three to sit down with you and talk about their term's goals- just the next two months. We spoke today about being realistic about what they set for goals. I would like students to really think about what they want for themselves, what they are willing to do to make it happen and finally what kind of help they anticipate needing to get them there.
Today we
  • looked at the traditional algorithm (method) for multiplying numbers in the hundreds as 345x 245 and we also shared the place value algorithm which uses a chart and relies on addition skills as oppose to knowing all the multiplication facts. We worked on a number crossword that will give me a real indication of the ability students have to complete muliplication and subtraction arithmetic- some may just need a review but others will be in need of remediation and skill practice. Math concepts build on each other and my main goal term one will be to build confidence, challenge those who 'can' and ensure basic math structures and number sense are in evidence.
  • As a class we looked at the structure of a paragraph and what it needs to be a paragraph. The students then used the instruction to think about and write their own paragraph on the topic of "The Best Movie Ever..."
  • I did distribute planners to ALL children today- they needed the multiplication table today and I needed to ensure that we are all making a note of the homework in the same place!!
  •  We took some time to organize the binder that will be used for Language Arts, French and Personal Planning. I introduced the INDEX that will be used this year in Languages, socials and science.
  • During snack we completed the draw for school supplies. Thank you to all parentds who filled out the forms to give me some insight into your goals for your children this year.
  • Yummy blueberries were shared at lunch time today from the fruit &veg program- thanks to Ashleigh and Savannah for delivering the heavy trays to all classes. :)
  • Silent reading is really productive- there are just a few who need to get into the 'reading groove'
  • Every student received a two pocket homework folder this afternoon. I wouold like to encourage students to use it to take home papers as it helps both with finding them in their bags and keeping them from being crumpled.
  • The students shared their ideas with me about what they would like their schedule to looke like- so we are still working on the daily timetable and will let you have a home copy once it is agreed on.
  • We finshed the day with Phys. Ed. outside- I'm not too sure about 30 minute classes yet- We had planned to try 30 minute classes every day but the students and I both feel very rushed. We'll keep you posted about any changes.
  • For Art I would like each student to keep a personal portfolio. I have put the students on notice that we will be starting out looking at proper body proportions and anatomy (not nudes though- I hear you breathing a sigh of releif!!!!LOL)
So that's about the day. It seemed to go so fast. Hope you are hearing good things about the class. Have a wonderful evening enjoy the light!! See everyone Thursday- it's Thursday already!!
Mrs J.
