Thursday- our Class Charter signing day (Sepetmber 23rd)

We had a great Thursday today.
First- no homework has been assigned tonight as we are holding the annual Potluck and I'd like to encourage as many families to attend as possible. It's always a positive year opener for our community. Hope to see you there.

One Term 1 goal sheet and 1 Parent contact form still to come in. Verification forms were sent home today.

General Day
  • First spelling test of the year
  • Chapter three of our novel on CD - discussed the developing character of the protagonist Jonas- students are beginning to see and understand that there is something that is different about Jonas and that the community he lives in is (to use the kids words) 'creepy' . We are moving toward discussing the opposite of utopia which is dystopia- like the word dysfunctional, dystopia is the world that is completely totalitarian- a nightmare vision of a society!! Deep stuff but the student are responding to the references as we read threough the book. So exciting to be able to cover such ideas with them.
  • Math estimation and using front-end estimation to determine where the decimal point will be placed in answers WITHOUT doing the actual calculation (answers are provoded and students have to use their skills of estimating to place the decimal point accurately. We also completed some practice addition and subtraction of decimal numbers being sure to LINE UP the decimal point.
  • This afternoon we had our official class Charter signing activity and Mrs.Paxton was our guest witness and she placed the 'seal of approval' on it, the students all signed it and we had a toast with some ginger ale (made with real ginger!!) and a little snack bite to celebrate its completion.
  • some DEAR time
  • Socials Introduction to our study of The Ancient Worlds. I love the curriculum for grade seven social studies- it takes in early civilization, the ancient river civilizations, Greece and Rome and current issues in our world. Can you believe that we had an amazing discussion this afternoon about 'capitalism'. Wow- blew me away- I'm impressed the students have been watching some documentaries.
  • Art finished the day- the students are creating some very good Manga art and seem to be enjoying it.
Great day today. Need to sign off so I can get a break before this evening. See you tonight.
Mrs. J.
