Hi can you believe it's Friday already?
What a quick week!!
As for weekend homework this week, all I have requested is that the students take a few moments to reflect on the organizational routines and procedures that we set up and introduced this week.
No new homework has been assigned but there are a couple of students who were away this week and have missed some assignments which I have sent home with them in their homework folder.
There are three Term 1 Goal Sheets still to be handed in.
Week in review and general day
There were some procedures this week that are new (to me too) and I am impressed with the rate of acceptance and effort that was in evidence from the majority of the students. In my opinion, we had a good week and many of the ideas and diagnostic analyses that I wanted to implement were completed.
I have more homework this weekend than the students do but that will turn around next week as we establish our daily schedule and get the grade seven curricular work underway.
Today we began with a DPA (daily physical activity) game in the gym - everyone seemed to have fun. I am impressed with the fair play and the general cooperative nature of the group.
We previewed the Scholastic book fair offerings that will be available for sale next week (sorry!!) always seems so much money going out in September!! The students have provided me with a list of books they would like to see in the classroom.
We discussed the idea of 'utopia' and I introduced the class novel for this term. We read (I read to them) chapter 1 of Lois Lowry's The Giver some students may have it home this weekend- I encourage them to read it at their own pace but please be aware for reader's who struggle I have the book on CD recording. We will all be doing the same novel - the assignments however, will be differentaited for student level and success.
To round out the morning we completed a group activity about our class charter and agreements. I will be compiling the students ideas this weekend. Early next week we should be able to share our charter, our motto and our schedule of lessons.
Afternoon
We did some independent reading and then completed our annual Terry Fox Run.
The grade sevens were instrumental in its success. Thank-you to everyone who was a course marshall and gave up part of their lunch time and to those who buddied up with the grade two and three students. Great job- well done. Thank-you for being leaders and helpers.
We held a brief assembly and got the run underway at about 1:45pm
Congratulations to the students who ran the whole course- two students came in just ahead of Mr. Parker. First was Zachary Parra and second was Autumn Cram (hope that is correct- I have pictures that will go on the website). Callista was in the top five too. Great job everyone.
We had approximately ten minutes to pack up for the day. It seemed like an abrupt end to the week but no one was complaining. We had a visit from some former students and they shared some advice for this years' grade sevens. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard them say generally that this years' sevens should read, do their homework and believe that I can help them get prepared for high school !!! How sweet is that? - I didn't even pay them!! However, I do hope they'll get tired fast of coming back to visit every Friday!! (As much as I love to see them...)
Have a great weekend. See you for another busy week on Monday :)
Peace out !!
Mrs J.
