General Day
computer time pay back - we started the day in the computer lab and I was finally able to show the students the first section of a Consuming Kids documentary about the targetting of young people by the media and adverttising industry- it is quite eye-opening.
Free-time was owed (Monday and Friday missed labs)
back in class we comtinued with a couple more Mythology performances (Liam's story and the Dr Phil Mythical Issues show started and then the highly stressed actors asked for a bit more time (until tomorrow)- they might need a real shrink by the time this unit is finally over (I'll speak for myself!!:))
French- needed to return and review the -er verb endings on about half of the class assignments but that being done I now think they have the pattern for the -er verbs (I can't wait to throw the -re verbs at them now:(
Family Groups cheers for Sports Day
Math- p 13 Mean, median, Mode and range in action- how would a restaurant plan a menu if its average customer was 40 years old?- would that change if the average customer was 18? What about if the cutomers were children 3-9 years old. What would you serve and why?
If the range (spread) of results on your spelling tests was a large number, what does that tell a student? a teacher? a parent? How or what needs to be done to adjust the range?
Some interesting thoughts and answers from the peanut gallery.
Physical Education with Mr. Parker
DEAR time - bit of difficulty settling!! Found myself playing interference in some distracting behaviours - some just can't help themselves!!(see below for explanation)
Personal Planning
PUBERTY: physical, social and emotional changes. (categorization)
We had a number of slips of different body and socio-emotional changes that can take place during puberty- the students were asked to discuss the examples and then check out the different groups to see the types of examples other groups had to catagorize.
Then they cateogorized their examples on the board where we were able to look at where they were placed and discuss each example (some more thoroughly than others). We decided that it was indeed very difficult to separate the social and the emotional examples because sometimes one affects the other.
Tomorrow we will follow the lesson up and review our 'findings'. I have taken the student categories and prepared a hand-out which will help us realize that while different things might be happening to our bodies, we are all in it together so to speak. My goal for this unit is to bring about more acceptance and understanding of the natural process of these changes.
Dismissal came too quickly at 3pm as we were still trying to decide if 'mood swings' were a social or an emotional issue- I certainly understood that if I didn't wrap up the lesson there would be too many mood swings to contend with so I moodily swung open the classroom door and let them go into the sunshine - Ah, sunshine- I need to get out of this classroom too.
See everyone tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
