Monday May 10th, 2010

Welcome back to school campers. Those of you that made it to school definitely seem to be a little 'camp hungover' camp lag instead of jet lag!!!- me too- I am still feeling a bit tired.

I heard from the students who stayed at school that they had an interesting week too. That is good to hear. We are all back together now and have seven weeks of school to complete. The year certainly seems to have flown by!

Today we took it slow but managed to get a bit of work in...

General Day

We are now at the letter 'F' for vocabulous- the groups used the context clues and the Oxford dictionaries to find the meanings of the works used like facetious and flivver

Next we checked in on and continued our work on the Greek Mythology stories and scripts which will be shared next week.

I have received a letter from a grade seven student in Alberta who is taking part in a National project called the Great Canadian Mail Race- about 14-15 students are interested in taking part and we will pusue it in computer time today. I shared the concept and the letter with the students.

Music with Mrs McPhee was next after recess

After music, I presented examples of the upcoming group newspaper project which we are going to undertake in the next couple of weeks- each team memeber is responsible for a certain number of items and then they work together to 'produce' a Greek or Roman newspaper using the issues and topics we are learning about in social studies (I call it Humanities)

I took the opportunity to distribute the individual picture portatrits - there is no obligation to buy- I think if you like the pictures and want to purchase, you can but other than that, it is really a sophisticated sales pitch.

At lunch time the students presented me with a beautiful hanging basket of purple petunias- it was unexpected and much appreciated. They thanked me for camp and gave me a card- thank-you all so much it is a lovely gift which I can and will enjoy all summer long.

1-2pm Amy McKinnon presented session #7 of the Drug and Alcohol program- the last session is next week. Today's topic was concerned with educating our students about heroin.

DEAR/ quiet time was next- I have received a few new novels and factual books from Mrs. Paxton for our classroom library so there is a great variety of reading choice.

Computers finished the day - some students looked up the names of schools in the cities of different provinces for the Great Canadian Mail Race. I asked all students to check out the website www.no2meth.ca before they had free time.

There were a few hand outs tonight as well as the portraits
  • grad hoodies
  • school newsletters
  • scholastic book fair notices

Thank-you to Mrs. Kubin for teaching in our class this afternoon. Hope everyone had a good first day back. See you tomorrow.

Mrs. J.
