Tuesday November 24th, 2009

Please consider reading the whole blog tonight, especially if you have a grade seven student at Squamish Elementary. Thanks (I know some of you just check the homework)
I just watched the girl's volleyball games tonight- they did well but lost 2-1 against Stawamus. They played some great rallies and there were some excellent serves. Good end to the day.

Homework
study for Unit 9 spelling test
finish French poster (weather)

Reminder that there is 2pm dismissal and parent-teacher interviews are tomorrow and Thursday- I look forward to meeting with you and discussing any questions or concerns you have about your son's or daughter's progress this term.

I was covering the office and admin. duties today for Mrs. Paxton. Mrs. Hain was my TOC. She left me a note that said something to the effect that they were a really nice group of students who were just extra chatty!! She found as I do that throughout the day that some can become a little silly!!
Mrs. Hain's day plan notes show that the class genrally had a productive day.

Day in General
spelling Unit 9 prep for test Thursday
reading - Bermuda Triangle - reading and language activity
French- posters and work booklet describing weather from pictures and visuals in French
Math- tried some equation puzzles today but there seemed to be a lot of concern because the puzzles had some negative numbers which I haven't covered yet- it is funny how the students radar for anything different goes off and it gives them the defense that it's something they can't possibly do. My fault- in future I need to ensure that we stick to puzzles that are more review (maybe!! :))
Physical Education was interesting today the students had a difficult time working together for some reason- I think it means a change of game and interaction is needed. I'll put on my thinking cap and plan some COOPERATIVE games for this Friday!! (Ha)
DEAR fabulous job I hear. They are really settling into the quiet time for reading- now if only I could be sure they are actually reading !! (kidding- most of them are)
Science/Socials I set a poster acvtivity for each group to make their visualization of evolution- it probably was not the best kind of activity to finish the day as Mrs. Hain found that they 'got more hyper as the work period went on and some became very loud"!!However, she also noted the students who did a great job and I'll thank them personally tomorrow.
Also it seems that a couple of the groups are already running into problems with 'personalities' and I though they'd be good until Christmas break.
Clean up and dismissal was next.

Have you heard the School Board is proposing that all grade eight and nine students in the Squamish area (and catchments) attend the same school ? Have you heard that the school they want them to attend is in Brackendale? Don Ross Secondary is being considered as the site for a grade 8/9 school and HSSS for grades 10-12.
An e-mail was sent to parents today so check it out and either plan to attend one of the meetings or let someone who is going (me, if necessary!!) know your opinion so it can be shared at the meeting.
They are proposing that this will be in place for September 2010- next September!!!
I need to be impartial on this Blog but I have no hesitation in sharing with you my opinion on this issue in person perhaps during the upcoming interviews.

If your child is going to high school next year, you need to think about the implications of this change on your family and transportation as well as the school program itself. Grade eight and nines together in Brackendale with no older role model older students, is this a good fit for our children? Did anyone ask the students? The parents? The teachers?
Please feel free to add comments to this blog if necessary but I had better stop before I get myself into trouble (too late?)

Hope to see you tomorrow,
Mrs. J.
